Pure Montepulciano from the Barossa? That must be a first! It's from a single vineyard in the west of the Barossa, so good this vintage it was bottled solo. From the great RedHeads winery, and aged for 9 months in oak barrels, it's darkly fruity.
RedHeads started in 2002 in the McLaren Vale, encouraging young winemakers to work there in their spare time and make one-off, single-barrel masterpieces that normally they could only dream of. It's moved addresses a number of times, but in 2016 they put down real roots in the Barossa, with a superb, eco-focussed winery, solar-powered and nearly self-sufficient in water. They pride themselves on rescuing exceptional parcels of grapes from grower-mates, and making one-off stunners. Grapes for the Monte come from a small vineyard in Pindarri, western Barossa. It's a parcel the team usually use in R'Dotto Royale, but in 2022 it begged to be bottled solo. Aged in French and American oak for 9 months, this is darkly fruity with a savoury edge.
