Lusus Reserva 2018 is a lavish, indulgent rich red – as you'd expect of a wine named after the companion to Bacchus, the Roman God of Wine. It’s got great credentials too, being made by the legendary Osvaldo Amado who has won over 1,100 awards. Since 1991, he has been winemaker at the Adega Cooperativa de Cantanhede in Bairrada, a world leading cellar that has twice been named Co-operative of the Year and has also been counted among the Top 100 Wineries of the World!
Taking its name from the ancient mill that sits prominently on one of its hills, Moulin à Vent is known as the 'king of Beaujolais'. The most velvety and voluptuous of the crus and the most ageworthy, its wines can have a gorgeous Burgundy like richness. It's one of the most easterly of the cru villages and boasts crumbly pink granite soils, with seams of manganese. These make for luscious, velvety reds with the grip for potential cellaring.
First we brought you the (far from) standard Lobo e Falcão, with its dense ripe fruit and weight. It went down a storm, so a few years back we also introduced the Reserva edition. The wines are from an historic estate that has been in the same family for over 200 years. In the 17th century, it was the king’s falconry and special barrels of wine were kept aside for royal visits.
A sumptuously rich, blackberry and spice red using Sicily's prized Nero d'Avola. It's from mature vineyards, halfway between the coast and the high hills of Salemi. Neglected since the 1968 earthquake, it's been lovingly restored to grow top grapes.
This is an exceptional vintage of Les Grands Maréchaux. Strict vineyard management under the advice of consultant winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt helps bring out this claret's rich mulberry, plum, cedar and incense character. Superb and affordable.
Fans of our usual Saracosa will be bowled over by the intensity of its big brother, Governo. Suave and seductive, this is a full, rounded blend of Sangiovese and Merlot, aged for four months in small oak barrels. What’s more, a portion of grapes were left to dry for 20 days, adding terrific concentration to the wine. It’s a method known as Governo in Tuscany, dating from the 14th century. We think this wine is nothing short of spectacular. And the critics agree: it was awarded a whopping 98 points from top expert Luca Maroni.
Smooth with elegant fruit, this is a spectacular red crafted with Argentina’s flagship grape. It comes from a top estate in Patagonia, where strong winds and blue skies provide the perfect conditions for vines. Hence this red’s velvet fruit richness.
We’ve been championing the wines of Castillon for more than 40 years now. They can be just as good as Saint Emilion next door, and many critics and top winemakers agree. Wine writer Oz Clarke wrote “Top Castillons are already good enough to make many Saint Emilion proprietors blush”, while famous names such as Derenoncourt and Graf von Neipperg have bought estates there.
Le Roi Bœuf is an exclusive BIG red like no other. Along with local star winemaker Lionel Osmin, our Bordeaux buyer has crafted, what he calls "the ultimate steak wine". One sip of its decadent, richly spiced black fruit flavours and you'll agree.
This charming, silky Reserva is a shrewd choice for Rioja lovers looking for the perfect mix of complexity and mellow fruit richness. It’s made by the Murúa family and offers deep raspberry fruit with a wrap of toasty vanilla from two years in oak.
Rich, silky Rioja from a winemaking family who have been honing their skills for the last two centuries. Premium grapes from high altitude vineyards, plus six months in finest oak barrels, ensure lush ripe fruit tempered by toasty complexity.
