Since their wines first appeared in 2004, Château Vartely has established itself as one of Moldova’s top wineries. The team controls 300 hectares of vines grown in ideal conditions and soils, very similar to the best of Bordeaux. Most are naturally organic too – winds blow hard and chase away any disease. From grape harvesting to bottling, each step takes place under the watchful eye of Arcadie Fosnea, ‘Moldovan Winemaker of the Year 2014' and his deputy, Valentin Vrancean. Cabalié's popularity is down to a rare combination of imposing richness and easy drinking smoothness. Recreating that in white was no easy task. But Cabalié maestro Hervé Sabardeil has done it – years of searching, blending and hard work come to fruition in this, his ultimate expression of a southern French white. The magical grape mix is old-vine Viognier for intense honeysuckle aroma and soft texture, Muscat for dazzling grapey notes, and Colombard to keep it all zesty. And of course the other key ingredients are bright southern French sunshine, which ripens the grapes to perfection, sea breezes to keep them healthy and night harvesting to ensure maximum freshness. Together we have produced a small range of wines that champion little-known grape varieties, often on the verge of extinction. Both parties champion biodiversity and work with nature to create beautiful things. In this case, a wine from a small family estate in Sicily.

This refreshing white is pure Carricante, an indigenous grape of the island, in particular of the volcanic slopes of Etna. Bright and zingy, with ripe stone fruits, floral hints and a crisp, mineral finish, this wine is a perfect foil for light, creamy pasta, risotto or seafood.
