Pinot Gris is a top grape of Alsace. The same as Pinot Grigio, here it produces lush, spiced apricot and pear fruit, beautifully illustrated by this Gold medal 2018. Using grapes from next door to a Grand Cru vineyard, this is rich, ripe and intense.
Alsace is a picture postcard area of northeast France, peppered with pretty villages that wouldn’t look out of place in a book of German fairy tales. The Germanic influences don’t end there – the vineyards are planted with Riesling, the three Pinots and Gewurztraminer. Although it’s a mountain cooled part of France, Alsace is also the country’s sunniest region. This combination leads to wines of real fruit purity and intensity.
