His plan was to make the freshest, most aromatic, good-value white he could from whichever vineyards it took. Hence its ‘Vin de France’ classification. For Hervé, wine is an expression of nature's finest – the soil, the sunshine, the grape. La Belle Saison does that very well.

Touraine lies in eastern Loire, close to the Central Vineyards, and its best wines, like the Malet Réserve, comfortably give Sancerre a run for its money. For three generations the Malet family have grown top-quality grapes on classic chalk and flint-rich soils to sell to other estates. Then, in 2001, brothers Alain and Bruno Malet took control and started making wine under their own name. They now make two levels of Sauvignon: standard Touraine, and their Réserve, for which they select grapes from older vines so the wine has even greater concentration. Our Buyer Samuel was very taken with both. This Réserve has a smoky-flint, citrus and herbal aroma with stony lemony intensity. A classic with seafood or warm goat’s cheese and pear salad.

From a fourth-generation-owned Pauillac cellar, B de Fonbadet may fall under the humble Bordeaux label, but it’s intensity and complexity leave no doubt about its high-end quality. This 2019 has even won the Decanter’s esteemed Platinum medal.
Jeff Carrel describes himself as an eclectic winemaker. He’s part of a new generation of winemakers, operating without a vineyard or a winery. Instead, he sources small parcels of grapes from growers, rents a corner of a cellar and focuses on making brilliant wines. Currently, Jeff makes around 40 wines this way, including Morillon (the southern French term for Chardonnay).
Following malolactic fermentation in barrel and the addition of grapes with a hint of noble rot, the 2022 vintage has, once again, produced a rich, Burgundy-style white. It delivers on creamy intensity, ripe peach fruit and layers of buttery complexity. Ideally serve this big-statement white with cured ham, guinea fowl and wild mushrooms or creamy fish pie. Over 170 years of experience have gone into the making of this ripe tangerine and toasted brioche Champagne.
It's the work of 5th-generation winemaker Julian Fourrier, whose father, Philippe, created this special cuvée in honour of his wife, Brigitte. Her maiden name was Delmotte.
The grapes are a classic blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay taken from vineyards first planted by Philippe and Brigitte.
All the family's 18 hectares of vines lie within Champagne's little known Côte des Bar, described by Wine Folly as "the hottest Champagne region right now".
Made traditionally, this fine fizz was aged four years on its lees to enhance its rich toasty flavour.

For a time, wines were all about the winemaker. Personalities that liked to take the credit. Big egos and all that. But our winemakers know too well that it's the magic that happens in the vineyard that really counts. That's the way to ensure healthy, ripe grapes of delicious fruit purity. Grapes that express the terroir they come from. Our Sparkling Rosé uses all-Merlot from a prized new vineyard at Château La Clarière, in Bordeaux's Right Bank Castillon.
Currently in the first year of organic conversion, it should gain certification in 2024. Made by the classic Charmat method, the secondary fermentation, to give it the bubble, takes place in tank, not bottle. All sealed with a crown cap too. Easy! It'll bring a sparkle to any gathering.
Not many wines can boast 23 top Gold medals in six years, but that’s the triumphant haul for this claret, 2015 to 2020. It’s from a small estate in Saint-Germain du Puch, between Bordeaux and Saint-Emilion. The estate grows Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet on clay and limestone soils typical of the greater Saint-Emilion region. Owners Agnès and Alexandre Sueur and winemaker Gregory Dalla Longa make wines that reflect this special terroir and the unique character of each vintage.
And Bordeaux 2020, with its long, warm summer, was certainly high quality. "Bordeaux has another terrific vintage on its hands with 2020" wrote Jeb Dunnock, "outstanding quality level" put Suckling. Decant at least an hour prior to serving it with roast lamb or duck.
