One of the oldest wine regions of Spain, Cariñena lies just southeast of Rioja, a land of ancient low-yield vines. Most of its vineyards nurture native variety Garnacha, but this red shows its winemakers can excel equally well with international stars, including Merlot. This grape ripens to perfection in the arid rocky soils and hot sunshine. So well, in fact, the local blackbirds (mirlo in Spanish) love to swoop down and pick off the ripest, juiciest berries. So growers must be on the alert to harvest their fruit just at the right time, and before their competitors! Mirlo Merlot is a smooth, full-of-fruit red for easy sipping. Served at a cool room temperature, it's a great party wine, and tasty with chicken, veggie kebabs or frittata.

This is partly explained by its provenance, the Languedoc Roussillon, “the most exciting region in France” (Sunday Times), which also provides much of France’s best-value wine. But credit must also go to ‘Merlot maestro’ Claude Gros, who perfected his skills in Saint-Émilion. Among his many successes is a now famous Merlot-rich Grand Cru, Château La Fleur Morange, that scored 96/100 from critic Robert Parker. Claude returned to his southern French roots, and Domaine Ginestières at the heart of the Minervois, where he makes this majestic Merlot at an amazingly down to earth price. Caroline and Pierre Bécot are the fourth generation of the family to be proud owners of the Premier Grand Cru Classé Saint-Emilion property Château Beau-Séjour Bécot. In 2015 they added the 9-hectare vineyard château of Bernon Bécot to their family estate. It lies on the highest clay-limestone plateau of Puisseguin, a satellite appellation of Saint-Emilion itself. There they work sustainably in the vineyard, working hand in hand with nature to bring out the best in the vines, which are nearly all Merlot, with just a little Cabernet Franc. This is the 2016 – a vintage that has matured slowly and very well and showing lovely maturity and depth. With good structure, elegance and richness, this is a classic wine with roast red meats.

Fronsac is one of Bordeaux's lesser-known regions, but it produces wines of great character and depth. Château Dalem is an historic estate with records dating back to 1610.

Its vineyards are nearly all planted to Merlot, with a small amount of Cabernet Franc, and tended with meticulous care. As you can see from critics' scores, it is an admired claret and one that ages very well too. Matured in French oak (50% new), it has structure and length, but above all an appealing depth of luscious fruit and spice – like Christmas in a glass!
