Description

Botrytised or nobly rotten grapes make the world’s finest (and priciest) sweet wines. Here, however, this golden white is totally dry, yet complex with rich, honeyed, citrusy fruit. A most elegant creation from the rule-breaking Gentle Riot team.

Joli is a new creation from the boundary-pushing Gentle Riot winemakers. It’s a modern interpretation by the inimitable Jean-Marc of a luscious, dry, botrytised Sémillon that Tony Laithwaite made with Danish winemaker Peter Vinding-Diers 30 years ago. A portion of the Sémillon, plus the fresh, grapey Muscadelle, is from a vineyard in the Entre-Deux-Mers. The rest is late-harvested, noble-rot Sémillon from Bordeaux’s renowned Loupiac. This portion had the full works: fermentation in part new barrels, with five months’ ageing on its lees. This golden white is refreshingly dry and citrusy, but with a rich, honeyed, nutty complexity. With its toasty notes and lemony zing, this white is top with chilli crab pasta or creamy chicken dishes.

As with all wines from this outstanding domaine, Ginestières Merlot delivers quality and style beyond what you'd expect of a simple 'vin de France'. With dark cassis and wild herb flavours, this silky gem's a smart alternative to costlier St-Émilion.

It’s rare to see a French Merlot of this calibre at this price. This is partly explained by its provenance, the Languedoc Roussillon, “the most exciting region in France” (Sunday Times), which also provides much of France’s best-value wine. But credit must also go to ‘Merlot maestro’ Claude Gros, who perfected his skills in Saint-Émilion. Among his many successes is a now famous Merlot-rich Grand Cru, Château La Fleur Morange, that scored 96/100 from critic Robert Parker. Claude returned to his southern French roots, and Domaine Ginestières at the heart of the Minervois, where he makes this majestic Merlot at an amazingly down to earth price. If you come to visit us at Château La Clarière in the heat of summer, we’re sure to offer you a well-chilled glass of rosé. It’s a must, even if you’re a red wine drinker. And when the pink is this good, it would be foolish to resist. We don’t usually have enough grapes to make any sizeable quantity (the rest is reserved for our claret), but the wine has such a following that we always ensure we make some.

It’s a 50/50 blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, fermented very slowly and cold in stainless steel tanks. That way we capture the delicate summer berry fruit and zippy citrus freshness. You can breathe in all its lovely aromas, too. It really is as pretty and crisp as its label suggests, and is delicious solo and versatile with food.
