Low Stock Alpha Domus Syrah Collection 2019

Alpha Domus Syrah Collection 2019

Item Code: 4253219

Description

There's plenty of noise about New Zealand's great whites, but don't forget the reds. Syrah is a star in North Island's Hawke's Bay, shining here in this dark, supple red. From a family estate, this is a vibrant, silky cherry and violet-scented Syrah.

Alpha Domus was started in the early days of New Zealand winemaking – 1989 to be precise.

Anthonius and Leonarda Ham saw that the Western Heretaunga region of Hawke's Bay, with its ancient riverbeds and moderate climate, held the secret to fine wines.

They planted vineyards in this area, now known as the Bridge Pa Triangle district, and were one of the subregion's first wineries.

They remain family owned today and have received Trophies for their impressive wines.

30 years later, they have converted fully to organic viticulture, with certification from 2023 vintage.

New Zealander Barry Riwai is the winemaker. With a fascination for Rhône wines, he is well suited to produce this elegant Kiwi Syrah.

Enjoy with grilled meats or pasta.

Altos de Bergasa Gran Reserva Rioja 2016

Item Code: 4380416

Description

Mellow, 7-year-old Gran Reserva Rioja from this family-owned winery. Silky red fruits and spice.

Altos de Bergasa is from Bodegas La Eralta, a family-owned winery founded in 1990. Quite young in terms of Rioja.

It proudly owns 360 hectares of vineyard throughout the three subregions, with this luscious Gran Reserva named after its first plots, planted in the village of Bergasa.

At their modern cellars, they boast 10,000 French and American oak barrels, within which they age their finest wines – from Crianza to this exceptional Gran Reserva.

For this wine, they only age their finest grapes, all Tempranillo, ageing the wine at least a year in barrel and the rest of the time in bottle.

Despite its 7 years' age, it is still fairly youthful. Delicious drinking now, we recommend early opening and decanting to release all the flavours.

Aluado Alicante Bouschet Reserva 2020

Item Code: 3547520

Description

Customers love our Gold-medal-winning Aluado red. So be prepared for the even richer Reserva version. Winemaker Jose Neiva has taken the best parcels of Alicante; the result, fabulous dark fruit and spicy length.

When Jose Neiva Correira first decided to make a red from pure Alicante Bouschet, a grape usually used as part of a blend, everyone thought he was mad – 'aluado', moonstruck, crazy.

But a huge haul of Golds later and they've changed their minds. The velvety black fruits that are so loved by our customers can now be enjoyed tenfold with the even richer Reserva edition.

José has searched out the very finest, low-yielding and intensely ripe Alicante grapes for this super cuvée, and you can taste the mouth filling difference.

Even more richness and spice, but at only 13%, it's still no heavyweight and has a lovely zip of freshness to all that blackberry, cassis and damson fruit.

Enjoy with richly flavoured casseroles and red meat dishes.

Chapoutier Vignes de Bila-Haut Blanc 2020

Item Code: 3606120

Description

A rich, ripe Roussillon white with honeyed citrus notes, from top Rhône winemaker Michel Chapoutier.

Michel Chapoutier is renowned for his exceptional Rhône wines, but this region alone couldn’t contain his brilliance.

Since he took over the family estate in 1990, he has also acquired sites in Languedoc, Roussillon, Provence, Alsace – and far afield in Oregon, Australia’s Heathcote and Portugal. Domaine de Bila-Haut is his prize in the Roussillon’s Latour de France.

Its rugged slopes include soils of gneiss, schist, chalk and limestone, lending richness, depth, power and finesse.

This white is made from Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris and Macabeu, with a little this vintage of Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne for a more aromatic style.

Pure, unoaked and with white peach fruit, it pairs well with trout or chicken, but is great solo, too.

Low Stock Château Carcanieux 2010

Château Carcanieux 2010

Item Code: 3827210

Description

Bordeaux’s 2010 was described as ‘the vintage of a lifetime’ and its wines, many still in great shape, are the evidence. This is a complex, classic Cru Bourgeois claret. Barrel aged, it offers lovely layers of mature fruit, spice and new leather.

Finding a parcel of 2010 claret nine years after this 5-Star vintage was a coup for our Buyer Jean-Marc Sauboua. Critic Michael Schuster described the wines of 2010 on release as “massively elegant, fresher, firmer, more tannic”, Suckling praised them for being “very precise, focused and fresh to taste”, “dangerously good” said Jancis Robinson MW.

Médoc wines that year proved particularly good value too. The 40 hectare estate Château Carcanieux has very gravelly soils, hence its original name Carcanieux Les Graves. This encourages superb concentration and ripeness in the wines. Cabernet with Merlot, and aged in barrel, this silky claret has a fine balance of fruit and maturity, with spice from the oak. Decant and serve with steak au poivre.

Low Stock Château de Ciffre Terroirs d'Altitude 2016

Château de Ciffre Terroirs d'Altitude 2016

Item Code: 3401016

Description

Enjoy generous, warm fruit, notes of spice and herbs and a seam of grippy minerality in this authentic southern French red. It’s from a family estate in the Languedoc’s cru Saint Chinian that’s blazing a trail with award winning wines.

Nicolas and Miren de Lorgeril bought this beautiful property, tucked away in the rocky Languedoc hills, in 2007 and have devoted their lives to upgrading the château and vineyards. Their scented hillsides are strewn with vineyards and ‘garrigue’, the natural olive, pine and wild herb flora that can’t help but lend this wine its own special wildness.

Saint Chinian is renowned for deep, dark, spicy reds based on Syrah and Grenache. Sometimes Mourvèdre, Carignan and Cinsault are added, but there is always a refreshing mineral quality, and you’ll find that in this superb red. Winemaker Bernard Durand uses his New World winemaking experience (in Argentina and New Zealand) to make the fruit sing out. A top choice with coq au vin or lamb dishes.
