A Missed 1855 – A 21st Century Triumph

Founded in 1824, Château Malescassehas long been part of Bordeaux’s rich winemaking tradition. Legend even suggests it narrowly missed inclusion in the 1855 Classification– not for lack of quality, but because a broker drank all the samples before they could be judged.

Today, Malescasse proudly holds the title of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel,the top tier in the modern Cru Bourgeois system — awarded to just 14 estates in the Médoc. Nestled between the prestigious appellations of Margaux and Saint-Julien, in the gravel-rich commune of Lamarque, Château Malescasse benefits from the exceptional terroir that defines Left Bank greatness. The estate adheres to High Environmental Value (HVE Level 3) standards and practices meticulous vineyard management, treating its 35-year-old vines with Grand Cru-level care.

A Technical Vintage Masterfully Managed

The 2020 vintage was not without challenges – spring rains, drought, and heat spikes – but through expert adaptation and timing, the estate produced grapes of remarkable concentration and balance. The final blend (58% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot) was gently vinified and matured for 12 months in French oak (1/3 new, 1/3 1-year-old, 1/3 2-year-old), delivering both depth and elegance. Traditionally matured in 225L barriques, Château Malescasse broke new ground in the 2020 vintage as one of the first in Bordeaux to use 300L barrels, striking a finer fruit-oak balance. Now also trialing 500L, the estate cements its role as a true Bordeaux pioneer.

Tasting Notes: Where Power Meets Finesse

A deep, dark red color. Lively nose characterized by black fruit, an aromatic freshness with minty notes. On the palate the attack is full-bodied, silky, and beautifully dense, with notes of violet and chocolate. The tannins are soft and well blended. Elegant enough to enjoy now, but with the backbone to evolve beautifully over time.
