As Jancis Robinson MW says, “some truly magnificent wines are now emerging from Chile”. The country is indeed producing exciting and character-filled wines and the quality is exceptional. The quality is now being recognised, and the prices of its finest wines are edging up, so we are thrilled to be able to bring you this intense Chilean Syrah!
Chile's beautiful Elqui Valley boasts some of the world’s highest vineyards, as well as clear skies, ultra-bright sunshine, and pure snowmelt from the Andes providing plentiful water. As the World Atlas of Wine says, it produces “some particularly gutsy Syrah at altitudes of over 2,000 metres”.
This one comes from Viña Falernia, built in the valley in the late 1990s by Giorgio Flessati, a top Italian winemaker we’ve known for many years. He recognised the superb quality conditions from the beginning and proved it with a Trophy for the very first vintage of the Viña Falernia Syrah Reserva. The estate is still impressing the critics today, and the Falernia Titón Single Vineyard Reserva Syrah 2019 here (made with old vine grapes from that original vineyard) was awarded 93 points by both Tim Atkin and James Suckling.

The high, cool vineyards are regularly covered in mist, so the berries ripen slowly, gaining depth and retaining freshness and aroma. Giorgio handpicks the grapes, fermenting them slowly and ageing the wine a year in part-new barrels. From his oldest vines, it has a fine balance of ripe fruit, fine tannins and smoky spice.
Foodwise, it’s a brilliant match to wood-fired or barbecued meats. The luscious black fruit, savoury elements and wonderful smoky notes just elevate the whole experience. Stunning!
