Lovers of luscious Southern Italian reds, make room in the wine rack! Pillastro comes from Puglia, in Italy’s deep south, home to big, smoky, full-flavoured reds. It’s one of our bestselling Italian labels – customers love all that richness, warmth and bold, ripe fruit – and this month you get to taste the whole exciting range.
As Hugh Johnson says, Puglia offers “undreamed-of character and potential”. The gnarled, twisted old vines produce incredible concentrated grapes. In the 90s however, the growers were struggling and the heirloom vineyards were in danger of being bulldozed. Enter the great Angelo Maci – three-time Vinitaly Winemaker of the Year. Angelo established his award-winning Cantine Due Palme cellar (since named Winery of the Year three times!) to help save the region's traditions, its growers, and the almost-extinct grape varieties that make these wines so rich, characterful and super-charged. And aren’t we glad he did!
In your Wine of the Month Pillastro Collection enjoy:
3x Pillastro Primitivo 2023
100% Primitivo grapes from decades-old vines, all trained the special Pugliese alberello way for greater depth of flavour. Ageing in French oak barrels adds spice to this rich, weighty, Double Gold-winning & 92pt red.
3x Pillastro Nero 2023
More luscious black intensity – this one with Double Gold and 96pts! Here Angelo has blended the finest Cabernet with his Primitivo to make this dark, swarthy, intensely complex barrel-aged red.
3x Pillastro Selezione d'Oro Puglia 2023
This ‘Gold Standard’ combines Angelo’s plush ancient-vine Primitivo with decadently deep and delicious Negroamaro to create a powerfully intense ‘Rolls Royce’ Pillastro.
3x Pillastro Susumaniello 2023
A rare and exciting variety. In local dialect ‘Susumaniello’ means ‘loaded like a donkey’, which gives you an idea of this wine’s massive amounts of aroma and flavour. It’s lush, dark, smoky and intense.
