Dramatically rich, pure Primitivo from maestro Scipione Giuliani – the dark side of Il Papavero
Puglian Primitivo is “seriously fruity and bold” (BBC Good Food magazine) and this is one of the most appealing. It’s from Scipione Giuliani, the winemaker behind one of our most reordered Italian reds. A dense, rich, darker side of Il Papavero.
Dramatically rich and fruity, Il Papavero Primitivo captures the bold, juicy flavours of one of Puglia’s top grapes.

It’s no coincidence that the Papavero family of wines are among our customers’ favourites – winemaker Scipione Giuliani always manages to capture the very essence of the grape, the spirit of Italy and a delicious drinkability.

This is the granddaddy of the group, made purely from Primitivo from a plot of 50-year-old vines, resulting in very concentrated flavours. Scipione discovered the vines in Puglia and insisted that the grapes be bottled solo. To match the richness of the fruit, he aged the wine in barrel for several months, lending it mellow roundness and complexity.

Il Papavero Primitivo is a weighty red, best served with similarly hearty food. Enjoy with spaghetti with tomato, garlic and basil sauce, or with roast meats or pork casserole.
