For a more immediate and elegant expression, look to Rosso di Montalcino. It offers all the charm of fine Sangiovese and at a much more accessible price.
Experience this revered region today with our 6-bottle case for just $1,398 (normally $1,794). It is the perfect, approachable way to enjoy magnificent Tuscan wine.
Caprili Rosso di Montalcino 2023 comes from a remarkable family estate founded in 1965 by Alfo Bartolommei. Once part of Pieve Santa Restituta, it neighbours the renowned Soldera estate – two legendary Brunello di Montalcino names. Today, Caprili is one of the region’s star performers, run by Alfo’s three children, with his grandson Giacomo as winemaker. This is a fine, classic red with aromas of red berries, cherry, woodsmoke and spice. The palate offers similar flavours, with silky tannins, freshness and a long, complex finish. It’s a beautiful match for pizza, pasta, roast lamb or aged cheese. Decant an hour before serving to enjoy it at its best.

Here’s another silky Montalcino treasure. However, it’s not Sangiovese, but a ‘Super Tuscan’ Cabernet Merlot made by winemaker Valeria Vittori. In Sarageto, she combines rich, dark Cabernet with a little silky Merlot, ageing the wine in oak barrels. With bright plum and cherry fruit and a lift of wild herbs, this is a very fine, elegant Tuscan red.
James Suckling gives it 91pts: “A tangy and juicy red that has aromas of thyme, currants, sour cherries and licorice. Oranges, too.”
