For many white wine connoisseurs, truly fine Chardonnay begins (and ends!) in France’s legendary Burgundy. From minerally, crisp Chablis to rich, complex Mâconnais, Burgundy is a Chardonnay lover’s delight. Today, one of those lavishly rich and complex Mâconnais beauties takes pride of place in this special offer – the superb Château de la Greffière 2023.
Southern Burgundy’s Mâconnais has an inside reputation for exceptional value, but in the last decade it has gained a reputation for its astonishing quality too. They may not be able to have ‘Grand Cru’ on the label, but some of the bottles certainly warrant it. These are the ‘under-the-radar’ wines that we love to search out – and delight in passing on to you.
We’ve certainly struck Gold with this one! The Greuzards have been crafting superb wines at their Greffière estate for four generations now. In fact there is evidence the property was making wine from 1585. Their top vineyard – La Roche Vineuse – is 12 hectares with vines 30 to 50-years-old. No wonder the fruit is so deliciously concentrated and long. Added to that is slow fermentation with lees stirring, resulting in this rich, complex, luxurious style. Look forward to luscious white peach and citrus notes, a wonderful minerally complexity and a rounded, creamy finish. Superb! It’s a lavish accompaniment to roast pork or duck.
This is Chardonnay at its finest, but you must be quick. We were only allocated a very small quantity of this sublime wine, and only very limited amounts are available. HURRY for your share!
