Made in the style of a very fine white Mâcon-Villages Burgundy, Mark Hoddy’s awarded Le Champ des Etoiles is crafted with the finest Chardonnay grapes sourced from cooler sites in France’s Languedoc to preserve freshness and minerality. Ageing on lees in barrel lends a creamy, rounded texture and subtle complexity, while keeping the vibrant fruit front and centre.

Parisian-born winemaker Jeff Carrel trained as a chemist, then fell in love with winemaking. His deepest love is for southern France, just outside Carcassonne. There, vines grow at a high altitude, in a cooler climate to obtain just the ripeness Jeff is after. Pure unoaked Chardonnay, this one is ripe and peachy with a crisp apple and lemon zing. And look at the medal count! FOUR Golds, plus 90pts from Decanter magazine. Impressive!

The Limited Release label is reserved for top-quality parcels of wines that must remain anonymous due to their ultra-premium source. This one comes from one of the very top cellars in Hawke’s Bay and, at nearly 12 years old, is a magnificent example of how well top-class Chardonnay can age. On the nose, look forward to billowing aromas of ripe fruits and toasty oak. The palate is rich and rounded with peaches and cream flavours, gentle spice notes and perfectly integrated oak. Superb.

Everything he does in his vineyard in Piedmont is meticulous and by hand, and as he crafts his wines, he also crafts his poetry, which you can see on his labels. His Chardonnay is a lively, lipsmacking treat, brimming with fresh orchard fruits and ripe tropical notes. A brief time in barrel has provided texture and structure.
