Selección Especial Numerada 70 Reserva 2020 Toro DO, Spain
For years, Toro’s wines were a local secret. But that all changed when icons like Vega Sicilia began making wines here, just down the road from the bodega that makes this luscious red. Wine Enthusiast calls them “a standout producer” and it shows – this is a wine of real pedigree and class. Made from 100% Tinta de Toro (a local variant of Tempranillo), it packs a serious punch.

Rioja is Spain’s “most famous region” (Hugh Johnson) and “most important region” (Jancis Robinson). And this lavish Reserva comes from “one of the five best Rioja houses in the last 25 years” (Wine & Spirits). Aged for 18 months in barrel and several years in bottle, now is the time to savour its soft autumn berry fruit flavours intertwined with coffee, leather and spice box. Superb.
Selección Especial Numerada 72 Crianza 2020, Rioja DOCa, Spain
There are only 31 ‘Grandes Pagos’ or ‘Great Estates’ in all of Spain, and one of those is the winery behind this new release. A single-vineyard cuvée from premium Rioja Alta, home to the most elegant expressions of Rioja, it features hand-picked Tempranillo grapes. Aged patiently in barrel and bottle, it marries sumptuous black fruit with creamy vanilla, hints of tobacco and smoky spice.

As Jancis Robinson writes, Priorat is a tiny region “producing some of Spain’s most exciting, and most expensive, wine … ridiculously low yields of arrestingly concentrated wine.” This superb parcel comes from one of the most awarded wineries in the region, opposite which lies L’Ermita, which fetches around $10,000 a bottle! A blend of dark, swarthy Garnacha, rare Samsó, Syrah and Merlot, aged 8 months in French and American oak, it’s a fabulous, rich red built to impress.
