First up, France’s mighty Le XV du Président 2023, the ‘King of the Big Reds’, one of our biggest bestsellers of all time. It owes its lavish intensity to Grenache from vines (some over 100 years old!) that grow on the rocky slopes of the Pyrenean foothills in the Montagne Noire in France’s south. It’s an absolute cracker. Italy’s sun-drenched south also turns out magnificent black reds, especially in Puglia, a region home to “sensational bargains of real soul” (Robert Parker). Simone Cortese’s La Fonte d’Oro 2024 is made from semi-dried Primitivo and Negroamaro, whilst Andrea Bernardini’s Gold-winning turbo-charged Corsiero Nero Purosangue 2024 is made purely with fine Nero di Troia.
