Château de la Grande Tour is a petit château estate in the hands of Christian Dumas, whose family is very well respected in Bordeaux circles. This wine regularly wins Gold. The judges described the 2020 vintage as “Perky nose of ripe garden berry fruits. The palate is crisp, well-balanced and savoury and shows more of the same, extremely delightful aromas ... already very enjoyable”, and the 2022 has just scooped another Gold. It’s a classic blend of mostly Merlot, with a healthy dash of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc – a delicious balance between ripe fruit, structured tannins and freshness. A wine that will really come into its own with food. Serve alongside a Sunday roast beef with mushrooms to bring out the wine’s fruit.

Largely Cabernet Sauvignon, softened by a little Merlot, the wine was aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 15-20% of which were new. To enjoy this fine claret, open an hour beforehand and decant. Château Haut Pougnan has a long history of awards – seven Golds just last year. 150 years of experience and well-placed vineyards just over the river from the Right Bank stars, plus an exceptional vintage in 2020, have raised this rich-fruit claret.

A family estate since 1852, Château Haut Pougnan lies in the gently rolling hills of the Entre-Deux-Mers, just across the river Garonne from the famous names of the Right Bank. On their 34-hectare property, in Saint Genès de Lombaud, Merlot is the star grape, with Cabernet Sauvignon in a supporting role and a little Cabernet Franc, all ripening well on the southeast-facing slopes. In cooler, west-facing vineyards, the estate grows Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle to make a fine classic white. 2020 was an exceptional vintage in Bordeaux with " a balance of richness and energy” wrote critic Antoni Galloni. Enjoy that power in this silky, well-ripened claret. Delicious now (open early and decant) or cellar. A treat with roast meats.
