Caroline and Pierre Bécot are the fourth generation of the family to be proud owners of the Premier Grand Cru Classé Saint-Emilion property Château Beau-Séjour Bécot. In 2015 they added the 9-hectare vineyard château of Bernon Bécot to their family estate. It lies on the highest clay-limestone plateau of Puisseguin, a satellite appellation of Saint-Emilion itself. There they work sustainably in the vineyard, working hand in hand with nature to bring out the best in the vines, which are nearly all Merlot, with just a little Cabernet Franc. This is the 2016 – a vintage that has matured slowly and very well and showing lovely maturity and depth. With good structure, elegance and richness, this is a classic wine with roast red meats.

Château de la Grande Tour is a petit château estate in the hands of Christian Dumas, whose family is very well respected in Bordeaux circles. This wine regularly wins Gold. The judges described the 2020 vintage as “Perky nose of ripe garden berry fruits. The palate is crisp, well-balanced and savoury and shows more of the same, extremely delightful aromas ... already very enjoyable”, and the 2022 has just scooped another Gold. It’s a classic blend of mostly Merlot, with a healthy dash of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc – a delicious balance between ripe fruit, structured tannins and freshness. A wine that will really come into its own with food. Serve alongside a Sunday roast beef with mushrooms to bring out the wine’s fruit.

Château Haut-Pauillac belongs to the Peyronnie family and boasts vineyards dotted between some of the finest estates – vines planted on gravel soils, enjoying a climate moderated by their proximity to the Gironde estuary. Largely Cabernet Sauvignon, softened by a little Merlot, the wine was aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 15-20% of which were new. To enjoy this fine claret, open an hour beforehand and decant.
