Lussac is a satellite appellation of Saint-Emilion, renowned for its high-quality, good-value clarets. Château de Lussac is one of the best, this superb 2004 showing mature notes of mellow, toasty red fruit, with hints of cedar and spice box.

Château de Lussac is a historic property, dating back to Gallo-Roman times. Vineyards were first planted by Benedictine monks, while the château you see today was built in 1876. It has changed hands three times, most recently purchased by the Laviale family in the early 2000s. They have worked hard to elevate the estate to be one of the leading properties of this satellite Saint-Emilion appellation. Most of the 23 hectares of vines are Merlot, with a little Cabernet Franc, bordered to the north by woodland. This superb, 20-year-old claret was aged for 15 months in 30% new oak, the rest in one-year-old barrels to lend this wine its structure and longevity. Showing mellow fruit complexity, enjoy alongside simple meat dishes or a firm cheeses.

Château Haut Pougnan has a long history of awards – seven Golds just last year. 150 years of experience and well-placed vineyards just over the river from the Right Bank stars, plus an exceptional vintage in 2020, have raised this rich-fruit claret.

A family estate since 1852, Château Haut Pougnan lies in the gently rolling hills of the Entre-Deux-Mers, just across the river Garonne from the famous names of the Right Bank. On their 34-hectare property, in Saint Genès de Lombaud, Merlot is the star grape, with Cabernet Sauvignon in a supporting role and a little Cabernet Franc, all ripening well on the southeast-facing slopes. In cooler, west-facing vineyards, the estate grows Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle to make a fine classic white. 2020 was an exceptional vintage in Bordeaux with " a balance of richness and energy” wrote critic Antoni Galloni. Enjoy that power in this silky, well-ripened claret. Delicious now (open early and decant) or cellar. A treat with roast meats.

Château Haut-Pauillac belongs to the Peyronnie family and boasts vineyards dotted between some of the finest estates – vines planted on gravel soils, enjoying a climate moderated by their proximity to the Gironde estuary. Largely Cabernet Sauvignon, softened by a little Merlot, the wine was aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 15-20% of which were new. To enjoy this fine claret, open an hour beforehand and decant. A superb red to serve with your finest red meat dishes or a choice of firm farmhouse cheeses.
