Château Cazauviel 2017

Item Code: 4284817

Description

An affordable claret from Margaux, one of the Haut-Médoc's top communes, is a rare thing. So this wine from a little-known family estate is a bit of a steal. Due to severe frosts, 2017 was a tricky vintage, yet still producing 5-star wines.

Lying close to Margaux's Châteaux Giscours and du Tertre, Château Cazauviel remains surprisingly under the radar. It was inherited by Régis Bernaleau from his father in 1978 and today remains in family hands. It is situated on the prized gravel soils of the Arsac plateau, which lends both an intensity and a finesse to the wine. This pretty claret is from a vintage struck by early April frosts – the most devastating for many years.

It reduced yields, but as Decanter wrote, "there are some excellent wines." Most, like Cazauviel 2017, are not long keepers, but makes delightful drinking now. Ideally open a couple of hours before serving and decant. It'll make a delicious glass with roast chicken with morels or a mushroom croustade.

Château Dalem 2020

Item Code: 2856020

Description

Fronsac is one of Bordeaux's lesser-known regions, but it produces wines of great character and depth. Château Dalem is an historic estate with records dating back to 1610.

Its vineyards are nearly all planted to Merlot, with a small amount of Cabernet Franc, and tended with meticulous care. As you can see from critics' scores, it is an admired claret and one that ages very well too. Matured in French oak (50% new), it has structure and length, but above all an appealing depth of luscious fruit and spice – like Christmas in a glass! It’s a luxurious sipper, ideal with cheese after the Christmas feast. “Spiced plums and cocoa-dusted blueberries ... Succulent" (James Suckling, 94pts)

Château Dalem 2021

Item Code: 2856021

Description

Fronsac is one of Bordeaux's most underrated regions, producing wines of character and depth, and always good value. From a fine estate, perched high on a hill, this 92-point 2021 is juicy and precise with sleek fruit and fragrant spice.

Fronsac's fine Château Dalem perches high on a hill, surrounded by its 14 hectares of sloping vineyards. It's an historic estate, with records dating back to 1610, that stayed in the same family until 1955. Michel Rullier then took it over and today it's run with great success by his descendant, Brigitte Rullier-Loussert. Its vineyards are nearly all planted to Merlot, with a small amount of Cabernet Franc, and tended with meticulous care.

As you can see from critics' scores (92 points from James Suckling and 94 from Vertedevin), it is an admired claret and one that ages very well too. Matured in French oak (50% new), it has structure and length, but above all an appealing fruity depth. Perfect with roast meat or wild mushroom risotto.

Low Stock Château Duprat 2020

Château Duprat 2020

Low Stock Château Haut-Brisson 2020

Château Haut-Brisson 2020

Item Code: 3818020

Description

For a 2020 Saint-Emilion Grand Cru that will age with magnificence, choose Haut Brisson – 94-95 points from Suckling. Tight, poised, with polished, lithe tannins, crunchy textured fruit, smoky exotic spice complexity - it has huge potential.

Until 1997, Château Haut Brisson was an 8-hectare estate in the Vignonet section of Saint Emilion. New owner Peter Kwok was keen to expand its vineyards and the range of terroir, so began to buy up vine parcels to make it up to the 18 hectares it has today. Judging by today's scores and the quality of the wine, Kwok purchased wisely and quality has soared. Today it is under the ownership of Stephane Schinazi and continues its stellar projection, with Michel Rolland as consultant.

All its top grapes go into this wine (they no longer make La Réserve), ageing 30% of it in new French barriques, so as not to overwwhelm the fruit with oak notes. Now certified organic, with the aim of going biodynamic too, the 2020 is a magnificent wine.

Château Joanin Becot Côtes de Bordeaux Castillon 2018

Item Code: 3822718

Description

Sister property to St-Emilion’s Beau-Séjour Bécot, Château Joanin offers a warm, ripe, velvety claret in this exceptional vintage. Merlot with Cabernet Franc, half of it aged in new oak barriques, it’s an appealing, opulent style to enjoy it.

Castillon is a tucked-away Right Bank Bordeaux appellation that, for too long, has lived in the shadow of its famous neighbour, Saint-Emilion. The two regions share the same soils, grapes and climate and the best Castillon wines certainly stand scrutiny next to the Grands Crus of the famous one. The upside is that claret lovers can still find Castillon wines at exceptionally good prices.

Château Joanin came into the Bécot family in 2001. It has the highest vineyards in all Castillon, in the lieu-dit of Joanin. Juliette Bécot is today in charge and, with the renowned Bordeaux winemaker Thomas Duclos as consultant, it’s clear they are aiming high. Merlot with Cabernet Franc, aged 50% in new oak, this is a rich red. Open early and decant.

Château La Clarière 2022

Item Code: 3773422

Description

Château La Clarière is Laithwaites' own Côtes de Castillon estate in France's famed Bordeaux region, very close to SaintÉmilion.

This is one of those 'under-the-radar' regions I love to search out, home to the finest quality wines, but not so well-known. As Wine International says, "If it weren't for the [political] line dividing Castillon from Saint-Émilion, its wines would be twice the price. The hills are the same, the soil is the same, the exposure is the same." The estate has won over 150 awards, including the Paris Lauréat Prix d'Excellence – not once, but twice – and Decanter magazine calls it the "leading estate in the Côtes de Castillon". La Clarière is our flagship wine and absolutely no expense is spared. Low yields, careful hand-sorting, months ageing in the finest new French oak, and rigorous tasting ensure only the best parcels become La Clarière. Mostly Merlot, silky, elegant, and supple, with a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon for structure, and slightly portioned Malbec and Cabernet Franc for balance. It's truly magnificent!

Low Stock Château Labégorce 2020

Château Labégorce 2020

Item Code: 0988020

Description

Just a stone’s throw from Château Giscours, Labégorce makes appealing Margaux, with all the character of this sought-after commune. This 92-93 point 2020 punches well above its price and offers very good value indeed when compared to its neighbours.

There's been immense praise from critics for Bordeaux's 2020 vintage, "another great year for Bordeaux" wrote James Suckling; "Margaux is one of the success stories of 2020" put Neal Martin, while Jancis Robinson declared "stunning wines have been produced". Although yields were down, Margaux performed well and Château Labégorce is an excellent buy. Unlike many of its neighbours Labégorce wasn’t classified in 1855, meaning that the wines remain today very well priced. With vines on average 30 years old, some over 100, they yield grapes of tremendous concentration, the flavour of which is flattered by ageing for 15 months in half-new oak barrels. With rich, warm black fruits, espresso notes and firm rounded tannins, this is a keeper.

Château Lavabre La Closerie 2018

Item Code: 4164218

Description

We are flying the flag for one of France’s newest appellations – showcasing a French red of sophisticated quality and exceptional value. We trust you will be as excited about this wine as we are.

The Appellation

The Pic Saint-Loup was elevated to AOC status in 2016 in recognition of the region’s consistently outstanding wines. Named after the peak which bears the same name, the waters here are pristine, and the south-facing vineyards embrace the cool breezes of the Mediterranean.

The Wine

La Closiere is an 80/20 split of the region’s iconic Syrah and Grenache. Small barrels are used for the Syrah (half of them new), while the Grenache is left to its own devices in larger 2,000L foudres. At 15% alcohol level, this is a hefty beast of a red but retains a beautiful elegance thanks to exquisite craftsmanship.

The Reviews

Château Lavabre La Closerie 2018 has been racking up some excellent scores from the world’s top wine critics…

Jeb Dunnuck awards it a massive 95pts:

“… a blockbuster bouquet of black fruits, camphor, graphite, ground pepper, and cured meats. With a touch more finesse and focus compared to the appellation release, it's full-bodied and has a beautifully balanced, concentrated, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish…”

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gives it 94pts:

“Blueberries, blackberries and licorice notes mark the nose, supported by hints of crushed stone and spicy oak. It's full-bodied and ripe but still balanced, with a more streamlined feel than the other Lavabre reds, along with silky tannins and a long, licorice-laden finish.”

And an impressive 17.5/20 from Jancis Robinson:

“Opulent! Incredibly concentrated… Lots of sweetness but at the same time it isn't sweet. Fig molasses. Coal dust. Graphite. Caraway. Lots of texture on those tannins… Huge power and broad, glossy, muscled shoulders. Nothing understated about this wine."

Low Stock Château Le Boscq 2019

Château Le Boscq 2019

Item Code: 2336819

Description

Brought to life by new owners in 1995, Château Le Boscq is today a leading Saint-Estèphe Cru Bourgeois estate. The wines always need time to soften, but this excellent 2019 is just beginning to reveal its chocolaty fruit behind sleek tannins.

Once a sister property to Thomas Barton's Châteaux Langoa and Léoville Barton, 18th-century Château Le Boscq was purchased by Maison Dourthe in 1995. It then went through a complete renovation and a big step up in the quality of its wine. Its 18 hectares of vineyard, unusually in one single block, are planted on gravel and clay soils in the northern part of Saint-Estèphe.

Clay provides a cooler soil which favours Merlot, hence a higher than normal proportion of Merlot is planted – just over half, with 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, the usual hero of the Left Bank, plus Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. A year's ageing in nearly half new oak barrels adds to the gravity and longevity of this firm claret. Open early and decant or cellar a while.
