It's a Spanish hero and has recently soared to stardom. Villa Blue shows how well it performs in the Cape's Stellenbosch, in the hands of the great Spier cellar.

Albariño used to be a little-known grape of NW Spain. Recently it has shot to stardom, adored for its Sauvignon-like freshness with extra richness. Little was grown outside Galicia - until recently that is. Now, look, even South Africa has taken it to their hearts. This is a fresh, summery white from the great Spier Estate in premium Stellenbosch, winner of 'South African Wine Producer of the Year' in 2011 and 2018, also Editor's Choice 'Winery of the Year 2022' awarded by Platter. They're one of the Cape's oldest wineries, proud of the many community projects they run, under the banner 'Growing for Good', for which they've won a top Ethical award this year. Albariño is a new venture for them and this white is a terrific introduction.

Ken Forrester is world renowned for his expertise with Chenin Blanc and has won an enormous number of top awards for them. He was one of the first in the Cape to show just how brilliant this grape could be. Ask him how to make a perfect Chenin, he answers "I wish I knew" and continues "Chenin is the most delicious wine and it is totally at home barefoot or in high heels and a dinner suit." Ken is also a strong advocate for sustainability and care for the community which, together, means everything is done by hand with meticulous care. Stagmanskop is a pure, citrusy Chenin from high vineyards, that look down on the Atlantic and are cooled by strong coastal winds. Enjoy its bright citrus, apple and melon fruit. This bright, fresh white is named after the Elephant Tree you see on the label. Adored by these great beasts for munching on, it is also cherished for its amazing ability to soak up carbon! Not even fast-growing bamboo can match it.

The wine was made by the talented Leon Esterhuizen at the sustainable, community-minded Journey's End winery. It was awarded 'Drinks Business Ethical Company of the Year 2021' and also in that same year, the 'Water Management Award' for the second time. It's owned by the Gabb family, instrumental in putting South Africa’s wine on millions of dinner tables around the world during the past 30 years.
