As with all wines from this outstanding domaine, Ginestières Merlot delivers quality and style beyond what you'd expect of a simple 'vin de France'. With dark cassis and wild herb flavours, this silky gem's a smart alternative to costlier St-Émilion.

It’s rare to see a French Merlot of this calibre at this price. This is partly explained by its provenance, the Languedoc Roussillon, “the most exciting region in France” (Sunday Times), which also provides much of France’s best-value wine. But credit must also go to ‘Merlot maestro’ Claude Gros, who perfected his skills in Saint-Émilion. Among his many successes is a now famous Merlot-rich Grand Cru, Château La Fleur Morange, that scored 96/100 from critic Robert Parker. Claude returned to his southern French roots, and Domaine Ginestières at the heart of the Minervois, where he makes this majestic Merlot at an amazingly down to earth price. Enjoy this Gold-medal winner's fine, dark cherry and wild herb character alongside roast chicken.

Christophe Reboul Salze is a big name in Bordeaux. Born in central France, he fell in love with the region's wines in his youth. Arriving in Bordeaux in 1980, he decided to make his passion a career. He gained a decade's experience trading in Grand Cru Classé wines and became director at one of the leading houses. Then started his own négociant business, which remains today a leader in the field.

However, he wanted to make wine too, so he purchased three estates in the Right Bank's Premières Côtes de Blaye and employed Stéphane Derenoncourt as consultant. The results have been exceptional. This superb claret uses a cuvée from each of his properties, Châteaux Les Grands Marechaux, Gigault and Belle Coline. A fine exclusive Bordeaux red.

Description

Château de Francs is one of the oldest estates of Bordeaux. Taken up by two leading Saint Emilion figures in 1985 and lavished with much investment, its clarets are superb. From the classic 2016 vintage, this fine red is dark, velvety and complex.

The beautifully restored, medieval Château de Francs has been the pet project of school friends Hubert de Boüard of Château Angelus and Dominique Hébrard, formerly of Château Cheval Blanc, since the 1980s. With such illustrious backgrounds, it was perhaps surprising that the two decided to invest in little known Côtes de Francs, Bordeaux’s smallest appellation. But it has proved a propitious move. As you'd expect, it comprises mostly of hand harvested Merlot, with a little of both Cabernets, aged 50% in new oak for around 12 months. It’s full bodied and intense with ripe, concentrated fruit, while ageing in barrel lends layers of complexity and roundness. Enjoy this exceptional claret with confit de canard or steak.
