Critic Robert Parker described this as "Consistently one of the top, under-the-radar wines of Pessac-Léognan". It has to be good to have 14 years age and still be tasting silky, complex and long. A mellow claret with earthy, leafy red fruit length.

Haut-Bergey dates back to the 15th century, a time when the vineyards of Pessac Léognan were more numerous, and even praised by the diarist Samuel Pepys. These days many have been engulfed by the city of Bordeaux – sadly, as this is where some of the region’s greatest, often undervalued clarets can be found. This property was purchased by Sylviane Garcin Carthiad in 1991 and full renovations begun in the cellar and vineyards. It shows in the superb quality of the wines and their longevity. Cabernet-led, with a sizeable portion of Merlot lending roundness, it was aged in 50% new oak barrels for 16 months. Showing mature dusty fruits, it is mellow, with cedar, earthy, spice complexity. Serve with game or, as a plain foil, with chicken.

It’s rare to see a French Merlot of this calibre at this price. This is partly explained by its provenance, the Languedoc Roussillon, “the most exciting region in France” (Sunday Times), which also provides much of France’s best-value wine. But credit must also go to ‘Merlot maestro’ Claude Gros, who perfected his skills in Saint-Émilion. Among his many successes is a now famous Merlot-rich Grand Cru, Château La Fleur Morange, that scored 96/100 from critic Robert Parker. Claude returned to his southern French roots, and Domaine Ginestières at the heart of the Minervois, where he makes this majestic Merlot at an amazingly down to earth price. Enjoy savoury oak and leafy notes in this well-structured claret from a tiny estate just north of the Haut-Médoc. It’s from the cooler 2021 vintage, so has a fresher edge to the dark fruit. Open early for drinking now – or tuck away awhile.



Château Peybourdieu is exactly the type of small, under the radar property we love to champion. It also illustrates Robert Parker’s advice not to “overlook the so-called petits vins of Bordeaux – they frequently compete with wines selling for two or three times the price”. Winemaker Denis Cayé is the third generation of his family at the property and his years of experience are evident in this fine 2021 vintage. The estate lies just north of the Haut-Médoc, between the Atlantic and Gironde estuary, protected from strong winds by forest.

A classic Médoc blend of Cabernet and Merlot, it delivers blackcurrant, earthy and oaky hints with a liquorice and cigar box character. Open a few hours early and decant. It's excellent with roast meats.
