The old vines and lack of rain here means there are fewer bunches on the vines, the grapes are smaller too, which only intensifies the flavour – exemplified in El Bombero. Javier works under the radar in Cariñena, where wine has been made for 2,000 years. But the region is overlooked in favour of world famous neighbour Rioja, so you enjoy superb value for money here (and, in the case of La Cantera, Rioja style quality). This is made from old vine Garnacha and Tempranillo and has rich, deep red berry flavours softened by years in barrel and bottle.

For an easy-sipping, juicy, supple red, check out this delicious new-release Mirlo Merlot. It's from Cariñena, neighbour to Rioja, in northeast Spain. Picked at peak of ripeness, it's bursting with silky ripe cherry and summer berry fruit.

One of the oldest wine regions of Spain, Cariñena lies just southeast of Rioja, a land of ancient low-yield vines. Most of its vineyards nurture native variety Garnacha, but this red shows its winemakers can excel equally well with international stars, including Merlot. This grape ripens to perfection in the arid rocky soils and hot sunshine. So well, in fact, the local blackbirds (mirlo in Spanish) love to swoop down and pick off the ripest, juiciest berries. So growers must be on the alert to harvest their fruit just at the right time, and before their competitors! Mirlo Merlot is a smooth, full-of-fruit red for easy sipping. Served at a cool room temperature, it's a great party wine, and tasty with chicken, veggie kebabs or frittata.
