Low Stock Alpha Domus Merlot Cabernet Collection 2017

Alpha Domus Merlot Cabernet Collection 2017

Item Code: 4253117

Description

There's plenty of noise about New Zealand's great whites, but don't forget the reds. Most of the fine Bordeaux-style blends come from North Island's Hawke's Bay. From a family estate, here's a superb silky red with bright fruit and savoury length.

Alpha Domus was started in the early days of New Zealand winemaking – 1989 to be precise.

Anthonius and Leonarda Ham saw that the Western Heretaunga region of Hawke's Bay, with its ancient riverbeds and moderate climate, held the secret to fine wines.

They planted vineyards in this area, now known as the Bridge Pa Triangle district, and were one of the subregion's first wineries.

They remain family-owned today and have received Trophies for their impressive wines. 30 years later, they have converted fully to organic viticulture, with certification from the 2023 vintage.

New Zealander Barry Riwai is the winemaker. With considerable experience all over the world, he is well suited to produce this elegant Kiwi take on a Bordeaux blend.

Low Stock Château Beauséjour-Bécot 2020

Château Beauséjour-Bécot 2020

Item Code: 2895120

Description

DW Wine Club Member Price: $499

The estate has been devoted to winemaking since the Gallo-Roman period. In 1787, General Jacques de Carles, wishing to commemorate for all time the pleasure that he enjoyed staying there, named the estate “Beau-Séjour” (meaning “lovely stay”).

In 1969, Michel Bécot acquired the château and brought the area under vine up to 18.50 hectares thanks to the purchase of neighbouring vineyard plots with the same terroir. He also turned seven hectares of former underground limestone quarries into a storage cellar where tens of thousands of bottles age under ideal conditions. His work in improving and embellishing the estate went on until his retirement in 1985. His two sons, Gérard and Dominique, have followed in their father’s footsteps while introducing numerous technical innovations to both the cellars and the vineyard. Only the ripest, healthiest grapes are now harvested, and then sorted one by one. Gérard’s daughter, Juliette, started working at the château in 2001 in order to market wines from the family estate.95-97 points Wine Advocate Displaying a deep purple-black color, the 2020 Beau-Sejour Becot prances out of the glass with showy scents of preserved plums, chocolate-covered cherries, wild blueberries and raspberry preserves, plus suggestions of rose oil, ground cloves and licorice. The elegantly crafted, medium-bodied palate shimmers with energy, offering a fantastic intensity of crunchy red and black fruits, supported by fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Simply stunning. (5/2021)

94-96 points Jeb Dunnuck The vivid purple-hued 2020 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is another ethereal, incredibly perfumed, mineral-laced Saint-Emilion, which is common from wines from the upper, limestone plateau. Gorgeous cassis and black cherry fruits as well as floral notes, violets, and chalky minerality all define the nose, and it’s medium-bodied, has wonderfulness and purity, and reveals a liqueur of rocks-like minerality on the finish. It’s another thrillingly complete wine from this team that shines for its purity, elegance, and complexity. (5/2021)

Château de Birot 2007

Item Code: 4409707

Description

Enjoy the subtle, mellow fruit of smart, long-aged Bordeaux with this remarkably well-priced claret that is drinking well after 17 years’ of age. It’s from a beautiful estate in the superior Premières Côtes. Delicate, complex, earthy red fruits.

Château de Birot is an elegant, 17th-century property with vineyards perched on a high plateau looking down on the Garonne river and across to famous Sauternes. Until a few years ago, it belonged to the renowned Castéja family. They sold it and the new owners have been working hard, updating the estate. In the cellar, they discovered a forgotten batch of château wine from 2007.

Despite its 17 years’ age, it’s still tasting delicious, complex and long. It’s Merlot dominated from estate vineyards in the superior Premières Côtes, with a little of both Cabernets. After 17 years of maturing in the cellars, it has developed some sediment in bottle. A good sign. Stand the bottle upright for a few hours and carefully decant just before serving.

Low Stock Château du Tertre Belair 2022

Château du Tertre Belair 2022

Item Code: 1744722

Description

Perhaps it’s the château’s location near St-Emilion that makes this claret so special. Or the know-how of the owner Bruno Dellac. Or the quality of this ripe vintage. What’s beyond doubt is the wine’s earthy richness and appealing ripe fruit.

Bruno Dellac’s wines are no stranger to Gold medals, winning them for most vintages since 2010. His family estate lies in Castillon, on the Right Bank, near Saint-Emilion and the Côtes de Francs. Vines planted 30 years ago are now producing grapes of superb intensity, especially thanks to the cool calcaire soils (the same as you’ll find in much of Saint-Emilion). Well-drained soil make vines struggle to find nutrients and the result is more mineral complexity and flavour in this Merlot-rich wine. Such is Bruno’s dedication to perfection that since 2010 he has converted his vineyards to organic viticulture, now with certification. Silky red fruit with structure and freshness – ideally open early and decant; serve with roast meats.

Château Gigault Cuvée Viva 2014

Item Code: 0934914

Description

Perhaps it’s the château’s location near St-Emilion that makes this claret so special. Or the know-how of the owner Bruno Dellac. Or the quality of this ripe vintage. What’s beyond doubt is the wine’s earthy richness and appealing ripe fruit.

Château Gigault was recently acquired by four like-minded quality enthusiasts, and now releases two wines – a traditionally made claret and this, their no-expense-spared Cuvée Viva. One of the four owners is Stéphane Derenoncourt, who also makes wine at some of Saint-Emilion’s smartest addresses (La Mondotte, Canon La Gaffelière and Pavie Macquin). One of America’s leading critics Robert Parker always scores the wine highly, describing it as “consistently one of my picks as an overachieving wine”. Critic James Suckling called the wine "very appealing" and "very satisfying". Hand-picked, low-yield Merlot aged in new oak, this is a deeply flavoured, well-structured, voluptuous, modern-style claret, velvety, too. A top pick with roast lamb.

Château Haut-Bergey 2007

Item Code: 1851507

Description

Critic Robert Parker described this as "Consistently one of the top, under-the-radar wines of Pessac-Léognan". It has to be good to have 14 years age and still be tasting silky, complex and long. A mellow claret with earthy, leafy red fruit length.

Haut-Bergey dates back to the 15th century, a time when the vineyards of Pessac Léognan were more numerous, and even praised by the diarist Samuel Pepys. These days many have been engulfed by the city of Bordeaux – sadly, as this is where some of the region’s greatest, often undervalued clarets can be found. This property was purchased by Sylviane Garcin Carthiad in 1991 and full renovations begun in the cellar and vineyards. It shows in the superb quality of the wines and their longevity. Cabernet-led, with a sizeable portion of Merlot lending roundness, it was aged in 50% new oak barrels for 16 months. Showing mature dusty fruits, it is mellow, with cedar, earthy, spice complexity. Serve with game or, as a plain foil, with chicken.

Low Stock Château Haut-Brisson 2020

Château Haut-Brisson 2020

Item Code: 3818020

Description

For a 2020 Saint-Emilion Grand Cru that will age with magnificence, choose Haut Brisson – 94-95 points from Suckling. Tight, poised, with polished, lithe tannins, crunchy textured fruit, smoky exotic spice complexity - it has huge potential.

Until 1997, Château Haut Brisson was an 8-hectare estate in the Vignonet section of Saint Emilion. New owner Peter Kwok was keen to expand its vineyards and the range of terroir, so began to buy up vine parcels to make it up to the 18 hectares it has today. Judging by today's scores and the quality of the wine, Kwok purchased wisely and quality has soared. Today it is under the ownership of Stephane Schinazi and continues its stellar projection, with Michel Rolland as consultant.

All its top grapes go into this wine (they no longer make La Réserve), ageing 30% of it in new French barriques, so as not to overwwhelm the fruit with oak notes. Now certified organic, with the aim of going biodynamic too, the 2020 is a magnificent wine.
