Pure Syrah is rarely found solo in the wines of the Languedoc-Roussillon; it's usually reserved for the pricy reds of the northern Rhône. From a small family domaine and vineyards close to Corbières, this has dark, smoky black fruit and spice.

Our scout and buyer for the Languedoc-Roussillon is Mark Hoddy. He's always searching the region's vineyards, to check out the vintage and the finest parcels of grapes. This is an ace find Mark discovered first in 2019 via an old friend in Corbières. Close by is Domaine La Lirande, a small estate founded in 1912 by the grandfather, François, in the tiny village of Coulobres. Every year, the Syrah from the domaine's 8 hectares of 40-year-old vines stands out for quality. Just taste the richness of this seductive red. Ripe black fruit, velvety, with smoky liquorice and wild herb notes, it's young, so best with hearty dishes like pasta bake or at a barbecue.

Search for Domaine La Sobilane and you'll see it has an amazing reputation for the famous, fortified sweet wine of this Mediterranean area, Rivesaltes. Some wines going back 80 years. They are knockout, but so is the estate's gorgeous, opulent dry white. Rivesaltes hasn't been a fashionable tipple for the last 30+ years, so the enterprising family, situated close to the Med and just east of Perpignan, explored other avenues. They planted native varieties which they believed would excel and made a dry white. This exotic blend of Grenache Gris and Vermentino with Chardonnay proves them right – ripe peach and apricot meld beautifully with a bright lemony zip and characterful notes of grilled almonds and blossom. It’s rare to see a French Merlot of this calibre at this price. This is partly explained by its provenance, the Languedoc Roussillon, “the most exciting region in France” (Sunday Times), which also provides much of France’s best-value wine. But credit must also go to ‘Merlot maestro’ Claude Gros, who perfected his skills in Saint-Émilion. Among his many successes is a now famous Merlot-rich Grand Cru, Château La Fleur Morange, that scored 96/100 from critic Robert Parker. Claude returned to his southern French roots, and Domaine Ginestières at the heart of the Minervois, where he makes this majestic Merlot at an amazingly down to earth price. Botrytised or nobly rotten grapes make the world’s finest (and priciest) sweet wines. Here, however, this golden white is totally dry, yet complex with rich, honeyed, citrusy fruit. A most elegant creation from the rule-breaking Gentle Riot team.

Joli is a new creation from the boundary-pushing Gentle Riot winemakers. It’s a modern interpretation by the inimitable Jean-Marc of a luscious, dry, botrytised Sémillon that Tony Laithwaite made with Danish winemaker Peter Vinding-Diers 30 years ago. A portion of the Sémillon, plus the fresh, grapey Muscadelle, is from a vineyard in the Entre-Deux-Mers. The rest is late-harvested, noble-rot Sémillon from Bordeaux’s renowned Loupiac. This portion had the full works: fermentation in part new barrels, with five months’ ageing on its lees. This golden white is refreshingly dry and citrusy, but with a rich, honeyed, nutty complexity. With its toasty notes and lemony zing, this white is top with chilli crab pasta or creamy chicken dishes.
