It's a wine that's been named among Wine Spectator's World Top 100 wines, from a cellar that's also on their list of Top 100 Wineries in the World. (We can't tell you who, but we don't think you'll mind once you taste it). Of course, Pinot Grigio is known for being a very refreshing drop; crisp with delicate flavours. But a Pinot Grigio from this winemaker, using grapes from Friuli's premium vineyards, is in another realm. The flavours reach an intensity you wouldn't dream possible of this variety. Discover here intense apple and peach fruit, with a floral lift and a subtle spicy finish. Gently chill, it'll be an elegant partner for your finest fish or chicken dishes or solo.

Saracosa is inspired by the 'Super Tuscans' – a style first developed by Antinori in the 1970s.

These wines kick started the region's renaissance and became some of the most exclusive and expensive in the world. Saracosa is from the Barbanera family estate, overlooked by the Saracosa hill near Montalcino. Half the vineyards are in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, and the remainder just beyond. In the fine 2019 vintage Saracosa's old vines delivered exceptional concentration.

The fruit was then part-aged in French oak barriques to lend a toasty layer of complexity. Dense, dark cherry and chocolatey tones make this a serious choice for pasta with pork ragù or bistecca alla fiorentina (steak with cannellini beans in tomato sauce).

Il Brutto comes from Puglia, home to wines with "undreamed-of character and potential" (Parker). The fruit comes from tiny plots of century-old Negroamaro and Primitivo vines – heirlooms handed down through generations.

These gnarled, twisted vines may be ugly ('brutto'), but they produce absolutely incredible grapes. Unfortunately, without a big budget to promote or make the wines, these amazing grapes were being sold off at a very low price. The growers were struggling, and property developers were circling. Those heirloom vineyards were very close to being sold off, the precious vines ripped up and bulldozed!

Angelo is a champion of the Puglia region, and he established his award-winning Cantine Due Palme cellar in the 1980s to help save the region's traditions and growers just like these ones. Recognising the quality of these old vines and their precious fruit, he enabled the vineyards to be saved. This sensational Double Gold, two-time 90pt (one from Italy's top critic Luca Maroni) Il Brutto Negroamaro Primitivo 2021 – a characteristically warming southern Italian red with a wealth of flavour.

"Attractive nose of bilberries, redcurrants, smoky and spicy notes and a touch of coffee. Full-bodied, lively and quite dense on the palate, restating its flamboyant flavors over a backdrop of well-judged oak" (Gilbert & Gaillard). One taste will transport you to southern Italy … you can almost feel the Italian sun. It's so good! Serve this treasured red with your finest roast meats or a platter of antipasti.

Corsiero Nero is an exciting ‘black red’ from the sun-soaked vineyards of Puglia in the south of Italy, a region with “undreamed-of character and potential” (Hugh Johnson).

Like the much adored so-called ‘standard’ Corsiero, this punchy rich red is full of the dark spicy cherry fruit of Nero di Troia. It’s a terrific southern Italian grape, deeply coloured and full of dense red fruit, and with excellent structure. However, in our ‘riserva’ edition – our thoroughbred charger, Purosangue – the grapes are from particularly old vines to lend even more intensity of flavour.

Leading winemaker Mario Ercolino made a rigorous selection of the grapes, then oak aged the wine in barrel to create this sleek, aristocratic red that will warm you with its velvety texture, rich spice and dense black fruit. Partner with equally substantial dishes – we recommend a well seasoned pork and butter bean casserole or meaty pasta.

Antonio Federici is a small, 3rd-generation cellar in Lazio, just south of Rome. As you'll taste here, its wines are both authentic and delicious. Normally, they only supply their meagre output to top restaurants in Rome.

But with most shut in 2020, we managed to gain a small allocation of this superb, cherry-scented red. And again, the following year. On fine limestone soils (the rocks of which were used to build some of Rome's most famous buildings) they grow some of Italy's most characterful native grapes.

From these they make a small range of award-winning wines. No doubt the skill of top Italian consultant Franco and Matteo Bernabei comes into play, as well as the commitment and passion of the family.
