Ultima Edizione NV

Item Code: 0232522

Description

When we first showed this at a customer tasting, it scored double the points of its nearest rival. Winemaker Dennis Verdecchia combines ripe Montepulciano, cherryish Sangiovese, dark Primitivo and spicy Negroamaro for powerful flavour.

Ultima Edizione started a few years back as a special project from the Farnese cellar. Based in an ancient castle in Abruzzo, the cellar has a terrific reputation and has been named Italy’s ‘Winery of the Year’ three times. We've been working with them for many years and for this wine we gave them free rein to produce the best red possible, regardless of region.

Talented winemaker today is Dennis Verdecchia, who cherry picked tiny parcels of premium soft, ripe Montepulciano and Sangiovese from Abruzzo, and dark Primitivo and spicy Negroamaro from sun-baked vineyards in Puglia in the south. Barrel ageing, then blending has produced this intensely flavoured, velvety red. Weighty, it’s best with roasted pork belly or a rich casserole.

Il Pino Pinot Grigio 2023

Item Code: 0536123

Description

Revel in the brilliant, green apple fruit and refreshing zip in this stand-apart Pinot Grigio. It’s from the Italian hotspot for this grape – the Veneto – and is so much more than simply fresh.

Northern Italian Pinot Grigio tends to be a stony fresh, subtle fruit white. That's true of Il Pino, but the wine has just a little bit more, too. Riper orchard fruit, with citrus freshness and it’s always good value. It comes from the high-altitude Adige Valley, just inland from Venice and home to some of the best quality Pinot Grigio in Italy. Plentiful sunshine and cooling mountain breezes together ensure healthy, ripe grapes with excellent aromatics.

Deliciously fresh and thirst quenching, this wine displays crisp lemon and grapefruit flavours, white stone fruit and a minerally edge. It’s a ‘drink anytime’ wine, but perhaps best enjoyed as an aperitivo or with grilled white fish, prawn or spring vegetable risotto or leafy summer salads.

Low Stock Collezione di Paolo Chianti Riserva 2020

Collezione di Paolo Chianti Riserva 2020

Item Code: 0004720

Description

Chianti is a timeless Italian classic, while Riserva signifies a superior wine with ageing. This is from Paolo Masi's family estate, in premium Rufina, with whom we've been working for 30 years. Tuscan wines that are always excellent and good value.

Paola Masi is a gifted winemaker who has been delighting fans with his well-priced, handcrafted Tuscan reds for 30 years. His flagship Chianti Riserva soars above the rest, thanks to his meticulous methods and the estate’s exceptional location. Founded in 1900, the Masi estate rests high on a hill, overlooking the Argomenna valley. It lies in Rufina, a region described by Wine Enthusiast as “one of the most quality driven zones”, and comprises 45 hectares of vines, plus olive groves and swathes of woodland. In 1993, Paolo took over the estate from his father, and has worked hard to modernise and improve both the vineyards and the cellar. Aged in oak barrels for 14 months, the elegant 2020 Riserva is a silky, complex, cherry and spice red.

Lustrato Prosecco

Item Code: 4226523

Description

Quintessentially Italian, this Prosecco is filled with soft pear, lemony freshness, and delicate blossom. It’s a Frizzante Prosecco, meaning it has a more gentle sparkle than a Spumante. Refreshingly dry and crisp – pop the bottle and pour!

A dazzling frizzante Prosecco from Italy’s Anselmi family estate. The winery boasts nearly a century of winemaking, combining experience and tradition with an eye on the future. In 1928, Ettore Anselmi bought a plot of land in Verona – 25 hectares dedicated to the cultivation of vineyards and orchards. They moved to Friuli-Venezia Giulia in the 1950s, and now boast 250 hectares of vineyards. Today, Ettore’s son Luigi is the winemaker having absorbed his father’s philosophy and passion for the land. It’s a fragrant Prosecco with soft orchard fruit and blossom aromas, and mineral notes. Light and crisp with mouth-caressing bubbles. There’s no need to wait for celebration, it makes a delicious aperitivo enjoyed with crisps and olives.

Tosti Moscato d'Asti 2018

Item Code: 3759918

Description

Even if you think you’re not a fan of a medium-sweet style of fizz, this is one you must try. It’s full of refreshing bubbly charm with classic Moscato hints of rose petal and grape that makes your mouth water.

It’s a terrific glassful on its own, anytime of the day, perfect with a slice of cake (Madeira or lemon and almond perhaps) or fruity pudding. Moscato is of course the same as France’s Muscat, one of the most aromatic varieties in the world, only challenged to that title by Gewurztraminer! Asti is the finest area of Italy’s Piedmont for the style and we think this is the best we’ve tasted. It’ll bring thoughts of spring to mind whatever the time of year. Embrace the sweetness and freshness – this fizz is a delight. Chill well.

Alessandro Gallici Pinot Grigio (187ml) 2021

Item Code: 3303021

Description

This is a special Pinot Grigio from Alessandro Gallici, the winemaker behind many of our best selling northern Italian wines. Being a local, he just knows all the best spots for seriously good grapes. His Pinot Grigio is super citrusy and crisp.

We've worked with Alessandro Gallici for almost 20 years and, like our customers, love the wines that he makes.

He was born in Friuli, but doesn't come from a long line of winemakers. His dad was a truck driver, but everyone in the village used to have a few rows of vines and, from these, each family used to make a bit of wine.

All this fascinated Alessandro as he was growing up and winemaking became his chosen career. For some years he was president of a local winery but in 2010 he started up on his own and his wines have continued to impress us.

Made with grapes from the region's top areas, this wine delivers delicate pear fruit and crisp minerally ‘zing’.

The 187ml bottle size is perfect for picnics or enjoy a solo glass of an evening.

Caroso Montepulciano Riserva 2018

Item Code: 2379518

Description

The Abruzzo region is renowned for its natural beauty, a region where the sea and mountains collide and made famous by the wines made from Montepulciano.

A great example of Montepulciano is the Caroso Montepulciano Riserva 2018. This supple and easy drinking style is made even more impressive by releasing it as a Riserva. As a Riserva, it must be aged for a minimum of two years – of which six months have to be in barrel. This has had much longer – two years in oak – with extended bottle ageing too. Crafted from 100% Montepulciano, hand-picked from vines between 20-40 years old, this complex red is rich with deep cherry and plum fruit, and imbued with a silky complexity. It would pair well with hard cheeses as well as mushroom dishes, particularly truffle.
