Altos R Pigeage Tempranillo Rioja 2019

Item Code: 3379119

Description

The flagship cuvée of Altos has won over 180 Golds and numerous top scores since 2006, the 2019 gaining 94 Suckling points, plus 7 Golds and 97pts. Using old-vine Tempranillo and Graciano aged in new French oak, it’s a serious, Grand Cru style Rioja.

Our Haut-Brion-trained winemaker, Jean-Marc Sauboua, founded Altos in 2006 and, all together, has won over 300 Golds, Trophies, plus many high scores. He leaves Amaia Amestoy in charge of the cellar when he's not there, whose CV includes experience at Murrieta in Rioja and Villacreces in Ribera del Duero. They make this wine from old-vine (80+ years) Tempranillo and Graciano, vinifying it using Burgundy’s pigeage method. This involves fermenting in open vats and plunging the skins into the liquid three times a day – hands-on winemaking that delivers great results. Aged for two years in half new French oak and bottled unfiltered, the wine offers seams of intense black fruit with spice-box complexity.

Low Stock El Bombero (magnum) 2022

El Bombero (magnum) 2022

Item Code: 0022822

Description

It’s no surprise that Spain’s El Bombero is consistently a Top 10 favourite. For over 20 years, fans have been drawn to its winning combination of velvety smoothness and intense richness, thanks to very old vines. Bundles of spicy raspberry fruit.

For lovers of big, smooth reds, El Bombero is a top choice. It’s from Cariñena, a hot arid region of Spain where sun-loving grapes like Garnacha (same as Châteauneuf’s Grenache) achieve amazing ripeness. There are no fancy châteaux in this part of Spain, but that doesn’t stop this area boasting some of the world’s best-value reds. The old vines and lack of rain here means there are fewer bunches on the vines, the grapes are smaller too, which only intensifies the flavour – exemplified in El Bombero. Crafted by award-winning Javier Domeque, El Bombero brims with spicy black fruit flavours. Delicious on its own and a tasty choice for all manner of dishes, El Bombero is always impressive. Even more so when presented in this 1.5 litre magnum.

Low Stock Cuatro Pasos Bierzo Mencía 2021

Cuatro Pasos Bierzo Mencía 2021

Item Code: 4361121

Description

Cuatro Pasos is a fresh, appealing red made purely from Mencía, a grape with echoes of Pinot Noir. The variety is renowned for its vibrant red fruit, floral notes and silky texture, both of which abound in this new red from Bierzo, northwest Spain.

Nearly all of the Bierzo region is dedicated to the Mencía grape, which after decades of producing wines on the tart side of fresh, has now shown its true colours. It makes wines at both ends of the spectrum - young and vibrant with bright red fruits, or from higher, lower yielding sites, more intense, earthy weightier notes, but still with a seam of minerality. This is an elegant, bright red from Katia Álvarez, one of Spain's top female winemakers. She is head of winemaking at Bodegas Cuatro Pasos, a winery named after the four paw marks of a bear discovered in their Mencía vineyards. The winery is proud to support a charity that helps to protect this near-extinct animal. Serve this charming lighter-style red cool with food or solo.
