Search for Domaine La Sobilane and you'll see it has an amazing reputation for the famous, fortified sweet wine of this Mediterranean area, Rivesaltes. Some wines going back 80 years. They are knockout, but so is the estate's gorgeous, opulent dry white. Rivesaltes hasn't been a fashionable tipple for the last 30+ years, so the enterprising family, situated close to the Med and just east of Perpignan, explored other avenues. They planted native varieties which they believed would excel and made a dry white. This exotic blend of Grenache Gris and Vermentino with Chardonnay proves them right – ripe peach and apricot meld beautifully with a bright lemony zip and characterful notes of grilled almonds and blossom. Decanter has named Domaine Zind Humbrecht as one of France’s Top 10 wineries: “Does winemaking genius exist? If it does then Olivier Humbrecht MW must be in the frame.” Wine Advocate called the wines “absolutely impressive in their depth”. The family have been Alsace growers since 1620 and started making their wines in 1947. They now have 40 hectares, all tended biodynamically – by 22 full-time staff – to express as perfectly as possible the grape and its limestone ‘calcaire’ terroir. “Pinot Gris is a grape which has strong ties to the earth. Description

Classic, citrus-zipped, dry Chenin Blanc, from a true specialist and the top appellation of Savennières. Philippe Socheleau uses grapes from his finest vineyards, situated in two valleys. Lees ageing lends creamy weight to its intense lemon fruit.

The Socheleau family are relatively new to wine, but they've learnt fast. Réne Socheleau was an apple grower, but his son Philippe was looking for a new direction. So, in 2001, they purchased Domaine des Deux Vallées with proceeds from selling their apple orchards. One of the first things they did was to rip out the plantings of Sauvignon and Chardonnay. This is fine wine territory for Chenin Blanc. Their vineyards lie on two main terroirs (hence the name Deux Vallées). The first is on the slopes between the Loire and the Layon; the second is around the village of Saint Lambert du Latay. Aged on fine lees for six months, this is a rich, rounded, yet intensely citrusy white, with light smoke notes and minerality. A superb dinner party wine.
