Search for Domaine La Sobilane and you'll see it has an amazing reputation for the famous, fortified sweet wine of this Mediterranean area, Rivesaltes. Some wines going back 80 years. They are knockout, but so is the estate's gorgeous, opulent dry white. Rivesaltes hasn't been a fashionable tipple for the last 30+ years, so the enterprising family, situated close to the Med and just east of Perpignan, explored other avenues. They planted native varieties which they believed would excel and made a dry white. This exotic blend of Grenache Gris and Vermentino with Chardonnay proves them right – ripe peach and apricot meld beautifully with a bright lemony zip and characterful notes of grilled almonds and blossom. Treat yourself to one of the world’s finest Pinot Gris. It may not be labelled 'Grand Cru', like many of the Zind Humbrecht wines are, but it tastes like one. Tiny yields, exemplary volcanic soils ensure an opulent, lusciously layered 94 point white.

Decanter has named Domaine Zind Humbrecht as one of France’s Top 10 wineries: “Does winemaking genius exist? If it does then Olivier Humbrecht MW must be in the frame.” Wine Advocate called the wines “absolutely impressive in their depth”. The family have been Alsace growers since 1620 and started making their wines in 1947. They now have 40 hectares, all tended biodynamically – by 22 full-time staff – to express as perfectly as possible the grape and its limestone ‘calcaire’ terroir. “Pinot Gris is a grape which has strong ties to the earth. It needs strong terroir and low yields to assert its character,” says Olivier Humbrecht. The wine's rich, creamy, exotic fruit shows how he got the balance just right. Perfect with sea bass or crab.

Albariño used to be a little-known grape of NW Spain. Recently it has shot to stardom, adored for its Sauvignon-like freshness with extra richness. Little was grown outside Galicia - until recently that is. Now, look, even South Africa has taken it to their hearts. This is a fresh, summery white from the great Spier Estate in premium Stellenbosch, winner of 'South African Wine Producer of the Year' in 2011 and 2018, also Editor's Choice 'Winery of the Year 2022' awarded by Platter. They're one of the Cape's oldest wineries, proud of the many community projects they run, under the banner 'Growing for Good', for which they've won a top Ethical award this year. Albariño is a new venture for them and this white is a terrific introduction.
