From Winemaker of the Year, Jorge Alvès, this is a very fine, elegant and expressive Alentejo red. All native grapes, sustainably grown, with a very light hand in the cellar, it is textured, complex and elegant with spiced black fruit and freshness.

You may know the name – Amorim – largest producers of cork in the world. This, however, is winemaking on a micro-scale, amongst the oak forests of Alentejo. The family have come together and restored a wine estate that was founded in 1758. They combine the very best modern thinking with the great traditions of the past – that means using clay-pot amphorae and terracotta tinajas, as well as barrels, for the winemaking. Above all, however, is a true respect for the area's ecosystem, with sustainability at its core, plus minimal intervention in the wine cellar. The vineyards for Almeia de Cima lie at the highest point (424 metres altitude) to ensure a freshness and balance to this fine wine, made from all-native Portuguese grapes. Open early.

Lobo e Falcão Centenário Grande Reserva 2020 comes from José's secret tiny vineyard. It’s his ancient‘illegal’vineyard of 100-year-old – and even older – vines.‘Illegal’because the authorities argue that these old vines should not have the right to the Tejo denomination … simply because the vines are planted amidst equally ancient olive trees. M is for Merlot, M is for Malbec, it's a maverick wine, a meeting of minds! The minds are from Bordeaux and 150km east in Cahors. Blending their grapes, plummy Merlot and dark-fruited Malbec, and ageing in oak, the wine's all supple fruit and spice.

Step 1 take a special parcel of exceptional Bordeaux Merlot. Vinify it using a special no-sulphur method for maximum, gulpable fruit. Step 2: blend with a parcel of Malbec from its original French homeland, ancient Cahors. From growers who know how to draw out the grape's gorgeous black fruit and not its mouthcoating tannins. Step 3: age it in barrels to add notes of sweet spice to all that glorious fruit. The winemakers were so taken by their experimental cuvée, they insisted we shared it with you! This blending is a total No-No for Bordeaux's stuffy appellation laws (and Cahors too) and an utter Yes-Yes for customers who love ripe, smooth-fruited reds. So silky, you can drink it on its own. Or with just about anything. No rules here!

South of Lisbon on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, the Setúbal Peninsula is famous for its rolling Atlantic waves and its long-lived, fortified sweet wines. However, the sunny climate, tempered by cooling ocean breezes, is also proving itself with bold, fruit-forward reds. Parker-rated winemaker Jaime Quendera firmly believes in the region and is dedicated to bringing it to the world’s attention. He says “I love being able to create, blend and shape my wines – I strive always to produce the best wine possible.” Indeed, he was the man behind the ‘Best Red Wine in the World’ a few years back.
