It’s rare to see a French Merlot of this calibre at this price. This is partly explained by its provenance, the Languedoc Roussillon, “the most exciting region in France” (Sunday Times), which also provides much of France’s best-value wine. But credit must also go to ‘Merlot maestro’ Claude Gros, who perfected his skills in Saint-Émilion. Among his many successes is a now famous Merlot-rich Grand Cru, Château La Fleur Morange, that scored 96/100 from critic Robert Parker. Claude returned to his southern French roots, and Domaine Ginestières at the heart of the Minervois, where he makes this majestic Merlot at an amazingly down to earth price. No stranger to awards over the vintages, this 2019 Pinot Noir is from New Zealand’s hallowed Central Otago. Rob at Invivo has taken parcels of Pinot Noir, carefully fermenting and finishing in part new oak. Rich with dark cherry, plum and spice.

Started in 2008 and with a string of Trophies and top awards from the get go, Invivo is certainly a 5-Star winery. Founders Tim Lightbourne and winemaker Rob Cameron are true innovators, “with no respect for the status quo”. They make wines from Marlborough and Central Otago. Among them is a Pinot Noir ‘Best in Class’ from IWSC 2010 and counted among the Top 5 in the World. Some achievement! Rob learnt his trade in many countries – Moldova, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Hungary, as well as the more classic France, Spain and Italy. He aims to bring some Old World elegance into the exuberant fruit of New Zealand’s vineyards. Judging by the praise poured onto this estate, he succeeds. Matured in part new French oak, this red is silky, rich and long.

From a family that’s been winning Golds for their wines since 1907, this is a ripe, juicy blend of Merlot and Cabernet. It’s made by husband and wife team Ivana and Yuli, based in Bulgaria’s Thracian Plains. A fruity, forward style to enjoy any time.

Ivana's Odiseya has a story that starts in the 1900s. Her husband's family had a winery in SW Bulgaria and, as early as 1907, it was winning Golds in London. Fast forward to 1945, Russian tanks rolled in and the family lost winery and land. They never gave up hope of regaining their property and once more making award winning wines. In 1989, state monopoly ceased, private ownership returned and many wineries fell into disrepair, including one on the Thracian Plains, close to the Rhodope Mountains. Yuli and Ivana came across it and dreamed of restoring the cellar to its former glory. The going's been tough, but Yuli persevered in the vineyards and Ivana learnt winemaking. Now they’re reaping success with, amongst others, this fruity red.
