Perhaps it’s the château’s location near St-Emilion that makes this claret so special. Or the know-how of the owner Bruno Dellac. Or the quality of this ripe vintage. What’s beyond doubt is the wine’s earthy richness and appealing ripe fruit.

Bruno Dellac’s wines are no stranger to Gold medals, winning them for most vintages since 2010. His family estate lies in Castillon, on the Right Bank, near Saint-Emilion and the Côtes de Francs. Vines planted 30 years ago are now producing grapes of superb intensity, especially thanks to the cool calcaire soils (the same as you’ll find in much of Saint-Emilion). Well-drained soil make vines struggle to find nutrients and the result is more mineral complexity and flavour in this Merlot-rich wine. Such is Bruno’s dedication to perfection that since 2010 he has converted his vineyards to organic viticulture, now with certification. Silky red fruit with structure and freshness – ideally open early and decant; serve with roast meats.

The wines of Saumur-Champigny rarely escape the shores of France - they are too well-loved in their homeland. This is a gorgeously silky, supple, pure Cabernet Franc red, from Paul Pisani-Ferry's 300-year-old, certified-organic family estate.

Château de Targé has been in the Pisani-Ferry family since 1655. Paul P-F took over in 2017, to continue the family heritage and to give it new life. He immediately started converting the vineyards to be fully organic, so they would last another three centuries! He has reintroduced biodiversity, planting trees and different vegetation to attract the 'good' insects and deter the unwelcome. All the vineyards are centred around the 11th-century Eglise du Parnay, and are planted on limestone soils with the region's heroes, Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Paul has gained wide experience – in California, Stellenbosch, Mendoza and Sonoma. A light touch in the cellar has produced this fine, silky red. Superb with grilled meats or panfried tuna.

Ambitious to achieve full cru status, Montpeyroux lies just northeast of Montpellier, nestled in the foothills of famous Larzac, the wines of which go for a high sum. Montpeyroux is a small village that has been prized for its exceptional wines since the Romans. It used to be an important trading post, as well as a refuge for pilgrims on their long trudge to Santiago de Compostella. This spring, our buyer based close by discovered this terrific red in the local wine bar and sought out the cellar. Vineyards here are buffeted all year round by the strong local wind, La Tramontane. It helps keep the vines disease-free and means the grapes ripen only slowly. Old-vine Carignan, Grenache and Syrah, it's a rich dark partner for a hearty casserole.

For over 40 years, Corbières’ Cave de Fabrezan has proudly made nearly all its reds by maceration carbonique, an exactly and costly method which produces deliciously silky, fruit-filled wines. Bunches of hand-harvested grapes are left to ferment whole and their juice decanted off the skins at the precise moment the best colour and aroma have been extracted. This special Réserve is made from an exceptional parcel of pure Syrah – a dark, velvety, sumptuous red named after Fabrezan’s most famous ‘son’, Charles Cros. Born in 1842, he was a poet (inspiration for the Surrealist movement) and an inventor (for colour photography, the paleophone and what became the gramophone). Here's a cracking red from Hervé Sabardeil, winemaker behind favourites Cabalié to Chante Clair. He discovered 30-year-old Malbec in the Languedoc. The grapes were top quality, begging to be vinified solo. The upshot: a seductive ripe red.

Hasn't Malbec come a long way! It used to produce the tough, tannic reds of SW France, then Argentina got a hold of it and made it a worldwide star. Not to be out done, France is revisiting this grape and, with refined techniques and careful handling, showing just how appealing its wines can be. Hervé discovered a plot of 30-year-old vines in the Languedoc's Vallée de l'Orb, on soils covered with big boulder-like stones that promote grapes with lovely intensity and ripeness. Impressed, he bagged the lot. Hand harvesting, gentle handling, and just a short time on its skins, have resulted in a silky, ripe, supple wine, with ample fruit tinged with herbs and liquorice. A fine choice with marinaded pork chops, roast chicken or veggie kebabs.
