Having lost out in the past to the New World, its winemakers have been working extremely hard of late to win back consumers so quality and value have never been better. Robert Parker described the Muscadet appellation’s wines as “probably the world’s greatest white wine value”, while wine writer Hugh Johnson said “I can think of nothing more refreshing”. The region is right on the Atlantic coast, so its wines are wonderfully evocative of the sea. You’ll taste that maritime freshness in this delicious white from fourth generation winemaker Noël Bougrier. For a quintessentially French experience, serve chilled with a bowl of moules frites – mussels and French fries.

From a tiny shed of a winery and gifted winemaker, Caroline Bonville, comes this exciting Roussillon white. Exotic native grapes, all from old vines, it's handpicked and barrel-fermented. A luscious, spiced, floral white with a racy mineral edge.

Caroline Bonville is gaining quite a name for her wines from her small, 10-hectare estate in the Roussillon's rugged Agly Valley. That's in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in France's deep south. She's had extensive experience, working at St-Emilion's Château Figeac, as well as in South Africa and the States. That was before she headed south to start her own 'thing' in 2003. And since 2018, she has been converting her vineyards to organic. This rare white is a mesmirising blend of local grapes – Grenache Blanc for stony roundness, Grenache Gris for weight and spice, Carignan Blanc for citrus zing and Maccabeu for minerality. The vines, around 40 years old, are planted in top areas – Maury, Lesquerde and Rasiguères. A riveting, fresh white.

It is renowned in Germany, Austria and the New World, but many forget that this variety produces some of its finest wines in Alsace, eastern France. Steep slopes, abundant sunshine (the sunniest spot in all France) and the Vosges mountains all lend the region’s wines a pristine freshness (whatever the sweetness – and they do vary from lusciously honeyed to bone dry), amazing intensity and purity of fruit. This is an elegant white from the Gisselbrecht family’s 350-year-old cellar, today run by brothers Philippe and Claude. With apple notes and lime zip, this white is ideal with fish pie or crab soufflé.
