Rodolfo Sadler, affectionately known as Opi, is one of Argentina’s most exciting talents. He’s an easy going, affable man, with a hint of mischief in his eyes – yet he’s incredibly humble. When probed about the secret of crafting such exceptional wines (two of which are always in our Top 20!), he simply shrugged and said, “this is how my family has always made wine.” Typical Opi – seriously modest. And why ‘Opi’? The nickname comes from his childhood, when his little sister would follow him through the family vineyards, calling out ‘Opi, Opi’, as she couldn’t quite pronounce his name. Argentina’s Malbec has taken the world by storm. While most come from Mendoza, Arquero hails from San Juan in the northwest. Vineyards are planted high, around 700 metres, under clear skies, providing optimal conditions for the vines. Despite producing delicious wines, the region’s lack of marketing muscle means they remain something of a secret. Here you’ll find Bodegas Antigua, started in 1990 by wine enthusiast Don Luis Victor Chirino. A builder by trade, he bought a winery with land for vines. His HQ is a historic building and local landmark, erected in 1918 and one of San Juan’s first earthquake-proof structures. After restoration, it’s been transformed into a wonderful cellar. Trapiche is one of Argentina’s top cellars and its winemaker, Daniel Pi, is world-class. Every year he picks out the three finest vineyards of Malbec and makes the Terroir series. 96-pt Finca Ambrosia is an “inky, racy and refined" Malbec (Suckling).

Founded in 1883, Trapiche is one of Argentina’s leading wineries. Twice it has won ‘Argentine Wine Producer of the Year’ at the International Wine & Spirit Competition and in 2019, 'New World Winery of the Year'. Every year Daniel Pi, one of the most capable and knowledgeable winemakers in the country, chooses the three best Malbecs from 90 separate vineyards for Trapiche’s premium Single Vineyard range. Grapes for this wine were hand harvested from Finca Ambrosia’s high (1300 metres) Gualtallary vineyard, then vinified in small vats with natural yeasts and matured for 18 months in new French oak. It’s a remarkable, textured wine, offering “Blackberries with violets and flowers on the nose” (James Suckling). Open early and decant.

In Mendoza, if something is described as Cachibaché, it is of little interest to one man, yet of great value to another. And that is how the Zuccardi family came to own the vineyard that gives rise to this very intense, velvety, old-vine red.



Rated third among the top 10 wineries of Chile and Argentina by The Wine Report, Zuccardi are hugely impressive. Several years ago, their vineyard manager stumbled upon a very old vineyard in Mendoza. The owner, smoking a pipe under a tree, described his small, nuggety grapes as Cachibaché, meaning they were of little value to him (barely bringing in a profit) but potentially of great interest to someone else.

This was because old, low-yielding vines can produce very intense, complex, deeply coloured wines, albeit in tiny quantities. So Zuccardi winemaker Rubén Ruffo got to work. His Cachibaché 2021 is a blend of Shiraz and Malbec, all from this ancient vineyard. Dark fruit and spice, it's superb with lamb shanks and hearty pasta dishes.
