One of the oldest wine regions of Spain, Cariñena lies just southeast of Rioja, a land of ancient low-yield vines. Most of its vineyards nurture native variety Garnacha, but this red shows its winemakers can excel equally well with international stars, including Merlot. This grape ripens to perfection in the arid rocky soils and hot sunshine. So well, in fact, the local blackbirds (mirlo in Spanish) love to swoop down and pick off the ripest, juiciest berries. So growers must be on the alert to harvest their fruit just at the right time, and before their competitors! Mirlo Merlot is a smooth, full-of-fruit red for easy sipping. Served at a cool room temperature, it's a great party wine, and tasty with chicken, veggie kebabs or frittata.

It’s rare to see a French Merlot of this calibre at this price. This is partly explained by its provenance, the Languedoc Roussillon, “the most exciting region in France” (Sunday Times), which also provides much of France’s best-value wine. But credit must also go to ‘Merlot maestro’ Claude Gros, who perfected his skills in Saint-Émilion. Among his many successes is a now famous Merlot-rich Grand Cru, Château La Fleur Morange, that scored 96/100 from critic Robert Parker. Claude returned to his southern French roots, and Domaine Ginestières at the heart of the Minervois, where he makes this majestic Merlot at an amazingly down to earth price. Christophe Reboul Salze is a big name in Bordeaux. Born in central France, he fell in love with the region's wines in his youth. Arriving in Bordeaux in 1980, he decided to make his passion a career. He gained a decade's experience trading in Grand Cru Classé wines and became director at one of the leading houses. Then started his own négociant business, which remains today a leader in the field.

However, he wanted to make wine too, so he purchased three estates in the Right Bank's Premières Côtes de Blaye and employed Stéphane Derenoncourt as consultant. The results have been exceptional. This superb claret uses a cuvée from each of his properties, Châteaux Les Grands Marechaux, Gigault and Belle Coline. A fine exclusive Bordeaux red.

Château de Francs is one of the oldest estates of Bordeaux. Taken up by two leading Saint Emilion figures in 1985 and lavished with much investment, its clarets are superb. From the classic 2016 vintage, this fine red is dark, velvety and complex.

The beautifully restored, medieval Château de Francs has been the pet project of school friends Hubert de Boüard of Château Angelus and Dominique Hébrard, formerly of Château Cheval Blanc, since the 1980s. With such illustrious backgrounds, it was perhaps surprising that the two decided to invest in little known Côtes de Francs, Bordeaux’s smallest appellation. But it has proved a propitious move. As you'd expect, it comprises mostly of hand harvested Merlot, with a little of both Cabernets, aged 50% in new oak for around 12 months. It’s full bodied and intense with ripe, concentrated fruit, while ageing in barrel lends layers of complexity and roundness. Enjoy this exceptional claret with confit de canard or steak.
