Low Stock Big Sky Te Muna Road Martinborough Pinot Noir 2019

Big Sky Te Muna Road Martinborough Pinot Noir 2019

Item Code: 3863219

Description

Martinborough's coastal cooled vineyards in New Zealand's North Island are perfect for Pinot Noir. Just taste this gloriously silky, elegant flagship red from a small family estate. Deep berry fruit, warm spice, savoury oak and silky tannins.

Martinborough may be less high profile than other Kiwi wine regions (it's only small) but the quality of its cool climate wines is second to none. It lies in the southern corner of North Island and is renowned for Pinot Noir. A government report in 1979 had highlighted that the conditions of the region were remarkably similar to Burgundy – free-draining gravel soils, with moderate temperatures and rainfall. Jeremy Corban and Katherine Jacobs founded their beautiful family estate in 2005, after a wine stint in France.

They chose a site in Martinborough's Te Muna valley and planted Pinot Noir. This is their gloriously fragrant, expressive flagship wine. Aged in new oak, it has a lovely balance of ripe fruit, spice and savouriness. Open early.

Cabalié Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 2023

Item Code: 1468523

Description

Mighty Cabalié is one of our best loved ‘BIG reds’ and this old-vine version has even more swagger. Seriously intense Carignan gives a boost of inky dark fruit to soft, spicy Grenache in this stonking, velvety, southern French red.

Hervé Sabardeil, our winemaker with limitless talent, has been making Cabalié, the big, ripe Catalan red, for over 15 years. He added the old-vine (Vieilles Vignes) edition in 2011, originally as a one off, but it was so popular we insisted he did it again. And again! The magic to this punchy red is really in the vines. At 60 to 100-years-old, yields are minute (about half of a Grand Cru claret). As a rule of thumb, the smaller the yield, the more concentrated the fruit, the more flavoursome the wine!

That’s why we call it Cabalié’s Big Brother. Still made in the same style that was beloved by the Roman centurions and now our customers too, it packs even more flavour than the original. Ideal with garlic-roasted lamb, rich stews or cheese.

Cabalié Origine 2023

Item Code: 3964823

Description

Roussillon is in the deep south of France, between the Pyrenees and the sea.

When I came over the high pass south into the Agly Valley in the 70s, I was captivated by the ancient vines on steep, terraced hills, topped by high, ruined castles. It was wild 'unknown' territory. That's where bestselling Cabalié, made by the legendary Hervé Sabardeil, is from. Hervé buys grapes for Cabalié from many vineyards, but the best grapes came from two vineyards of 100-year-old vines on schist/granite soils. They are two of France's oldest vineyards, lying on steep, terraced hillsides. When Hervé learned the farmer was retiring, he bought those two vineyards – and thus we have the 'Grand Cru' Origine … the purest essence of Cabalié … made solely from those two vineyards. It's a nearly all dark, spiced Carignan, with a few rows of silky Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, which add to the incredibly rich fruit and luscious texture.

Low Stock Chapoutier Vignes de Bila-Haut Blanc 2018

Chapoutier Vignes de Bila-Haut Blanc 2018

Item Code: 3606118

Description

Michel Chapoutier first made a name with remarkable Rhône wines. Now he does the same in other top regions, including the Roussillon’s Latour de France. From high, herb strewn hills, he uses native grapes to make this brilliant mineral crisp white.

Michel Chapoutier is renowned for his brilliant Rhône wines, but this region alone couldn’t contain his brilliance. Since he took over the family estate in 1990, he has also acquired sites in Languedoc, Roussillon, Provence, Alsace – and far afield in Oregon, Australia’s Heathcote and Portugal. Domaine de Bila-Haut is his prize in the Roussillon’s Latour de France. Its rugged slopes include gneiss, schist, chalk and limestone, lending richness, depth, power and finesse.

This white is made from Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris and Maccabeu, with a little this vintage of Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne for a more aromatic style. Pure, unoaked and full of white peach fruit, it’s great with trout or chicken, but also a delicious glass solo.

Château Dalem 2020

Item Code: 2856020

Description

Fronsac is one of Bordeaux's lesser-known regions, but it produces wines of great character and depth. Château Dalem is an historic estate with records dating back to 1610.

Its vineyards are nearly all planted to Merlot, with a small amount of Cabernet Franc, and tended with meticulous care. As you can see from critics' scores, it is an admired claret and one that ages very well too. Matured in French oak (50% new), it has structure and length, but above all an appealing depth of luscious fruit and spice – like Christmas in a glass! It’s a luxurious sipper, ideal with cheese after the Christmas feast. “Spiced plums and cocoa-dusted blueberries ... Succulent" (James Suckling, 94pts)

Château Dalem 2021

Item Code: 2856021

Description

Fronsac is one of Bordeaux's most underrated regions, producing wines of character and depth, and always good value. From a fine estate, perched high on a hill, this 92-point 2021 is juicy and precise with sleek fruit and fragrant spice.

Fronsac's fine Château Dalem perches high on a hill, surrounded by its 14 hectares of sloping vineyards. It's an historic estate, with records dating back to 1610, that stayed in the same family until 1955. Michel Rullier then took it over and today it's run with great success by his descendant, Brigitte Rullier-Loussert. Its vineyards are nearly all planted to Merlot, with a small amount of Cabernet Franc, and tended with meticulous care.

As you can see from critics' scores (92 points from James Suckling and 94 from Vertedevin), it is an admired claret and one that ages very well too. Matured in French oak (50% new), it has structure and length, but above all an appealing fruity depth. Perfect with roast meat or wild mushroom risotto.

Château de la Bégude Organic Rosé 2019

Item Code: 4057319

Description

Côtes de Provence is renowned for producing some of the world's most delicious, elegant and subtle rosés. And those from close to Mont Ste Victoire are the best of the best. From a 5th generation estate, this pink has superb savoury berry freshness.

Mont Sainte Victoire is renowned in Provence not only for inspiring the paintings of Paul Cézanne, but for producing some of the region's finest rosés.

It's a cru area, with vineyards planted on the mountain's lower slopes. Warm sunny days and cold nights are perfect for bringing out the aroma, elegance and freshness in its grapes.

Fifth generation Didier Lefebvre's Château La Bégude was founded in 1896. Such is his passion for his mature vineyards, he has converted them all to organic.

He grows classic Provence varieties – Cinsault, Grenache and Carignan, with a sprinkle of Vermentino, Ugni Blanc, Syrah and Mourvèdre.

Picked early morning and cool fermented, it captures all the savoury berry freshness you'd expect of this great wine.
