This fine Champagne marks the 50 year anniversary of Laithwaite’s. It’s pure Chardonnay from the grower Paul Goerg and the outstanding 2002 vintage. Long aged on its lees, it has lovely, creamy, toasty brioche notes as well as citrus, honeyed fruit.

We were looking for a particularly fine fizz to mark the 50th anniversary of Laithwaite’s Wine’s launch onto the world. We’ve certainly found it with this superbly rich, complex and elegant 2002. It’s pure Premier Cru Chardonnay from the tiny production, Champagne grower Paul Goerg. Secondary fermentation in bottle was followed by five years’ ageing on its lees (the standard is two), then another few years more, after dosage and the finishing of the wine. This Champagne was launched by Tony back in the 1970s and he’s still proud of it. No doubt he’ll be cracking open a few bottles during this special anniversary year, as well as tucking a few away in his cellar. An excellent celebration Champagne, when only the best will do.

Bernard Moreau has been in charge of his small family domaine in the Mâconnais since 1982 and is now assisted by his son, Alex, as winemaker. It lies very close to a village called Chardonnay, just like the grape! For this white, they use fruit from their 60-year-old vines, planted on calcareous soils and with excellent sun exposure. This is the perfect formula for wine with depth and concentration.

Stéphane Ogier is one of the most exceptional northern Rhône winemakers, producing "a bevy of brilliant wines” said Wine Advocate. This luscious blend of the region's white grapes is labelled Côtes du Rhône, but tastes way richer and finer than that.

Wine Spectator described Stéphane Ogier’s wines as “dynamic and elite”, while Wine Advocate wrote “the estate is unquestionably in the top handful of domaines in the Rhône Valley”. The family were apricot growers, then fortuitously changed to grapes. Such was the quality that, until 1982, they sold all the fruit to top estates Guigal and Chapoutier. Stéphane gained experience in Beaune and Stellenbosch before taking over from his father in 2003, adding extensively to the vineyards (in Côte Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph) and building himself a gleaming, modern cellar. Forget your preconceptions that Muscadet should be drunk as fresh as possible. The finest can age for years and Jérôme Choblet’s Herbadilla 2007 from 100 year old vines is perfection. From cru Côtes de Grandlieu, it is ripe, creamy, yet stony fresh.

From the age of four Jérôme Choblet believed he was a vigneron, like four generations before him. He was inquisitive then and no less so now. He even has a few rows of vines in California and China. Just for fun! Jérôme completed three degrees – in viticulture, winemaking and business – before joining his father Luc and grandfather, and increasing the vineyards substantially. His most prized vines are in Côtes de Grandlieu, planted a century ago. It’s the most westerly Muscadet area and, despite being closest to the Atlantic, the warmest too. The soil is mica schist with sandy gravel and a pebbly topsoil – ideal for long-aged wines, with remarkable concentration and freshness. Over four years’ lees stirring has lent considerable complexity.
