Northern Italian Pinot Grigio tends to be a stony fresh, subtle fruit white. That's true of Il Pino, but the wine has just a little bit more, too. Riper orchard fruit, with citrus freshness and it’s always good value. It comes from the high-altitude Adige Valley, just inland from Venice and home to some of the best quality Pinot Grigio in Italy. Plentiful sunshine and cooling mountain breezes together ensure healthy, ripe grapes with excellent aromatics.

Deliciously fresh and thirst quenching, this wine displays crisp lemon and grapefruit flavours, white stone fruit and a minerally edge. It’s a ‘drink anytime’ wine, but perhaps best enjoyed as an aperitivo or with grilled white fish, prawn or spring vegetable risotto or leafy summer salads.

The Pignoletto grape is considered the “king of the Colli Bolognese wine zone”, but few have heard of it outside of the Emilia region of northern central Italy. Our buyer, Leo, had to use his persuasive prowess to secure cases of this hidden gem from winemaker Daniele Artioli. And it’s proved to be a huge hit with our customers. It’s an easy to drink, dry frizzante, made using mainly Pignoletto (named after ‘pigna’ – the Italian for ‘cone’ – due to the shape of its bunches).

Its lively green apple notes are enhanced by citrusy Trebbiano and Muscat, which lends a grapey aroma. A gentle fizz makes it a delightful apéritif, perfect for leisurely sipping in the garden on a sunny afternoon. Serve chilled and pair with salad or seafood.

What’s not to adore about Prosecco? All those sophisticated bubbles, yet brighter, more fruity and affordable than Champagne. Il Papavero Prosecco is the latest addition to our ‘poppy’ range of wines, and already boasts an army of thirsty fans – it’s just so irresistible.

But that should come as no surprise when you consider the heritage of winemaker Scipione Giuliani. This maestro was born in the very heart of the Prosecco region. A true local, he knows all the best winegrowers and went straight to the region's very finest vineyards (usually owned by long-standing friends) to source the fruit for this fine fizz. Just one sip will transport you to a smart Venetian piazza. Great value, delicious taste – chill your bottle down and enjoy.

When you ask Alessandro Gallici if he comes from a family of winemakers, he laughs gently at the notion. Not at all, but his family had a bit of land in Friuli, with a few rows of vines, that had been theirs for generations. From the grapes of these, they made a simple wine for their own dinner table. All this fascinated Alessandro, and wine became his chosen career. And we're glad it did. We've known Alessandro since 2002 and love every new wine he sends our way.

For this fizz Alessandro carefully selected Glera grapes with a drop of Chardonnay. In Champagne, this would add to the price – in the Veneto this addition means it can't be labelled Prosecco, but frizzante. Whatever, it delivers citrus, tropical fruit with gentle bubbles.

After all, right across Italy, Prosecco is the bubbly of choice and as much a part of daily life as a gelato or an espresso.

This wine comes from northern Italian native Alessandro Gallici. He knows every grape grower worth knowing, every premium vineyard, and has spent his life making outstanding wines.

Softly spoken but passionate, he was for years president of a large winery, then started his own business focusing on a range of bespoke wines bearing his own name.
