Château Gigault Cuvée Viva 2014

Item Code: 0934914

Description

Perhaps it’s the château’s location near St-Emilion that makes this claret so special. Or the know-how of the owner Bruno Dellac. Or the quality of this ripe vintage. What’s beyond doubt is the wine’s earthy richness and appealing ripe fruit.

Château Gigault was recently acquired by four like-minded quality enthusiasts, and now releases two wines – a traditionally made claret and this, their no-expense-spared Cuvée Viva. One of the four owners is Stéphane Derenoncourt, who also makes wine at some of Saint-Emilion’s smartest addresses (La Mondotte, Canon La Gaffelière and Pavie Macquin). One of America’s leading critics Robert Parker always scores the wine highly, describing it as “consistently one of my picks as an overachieving wine”. Critic James Suckling called the wine "very appealing" and "very satisfying". Hand-picked, low-yield Merlot aged in new oak, this is a deeply flavoured, well-structured, voluptuous, modern-style claret, velvety, too. A top pick with roast lamb.

Château Haut-Pauillac 2017

Item Code: 4463317

Description

Bordeaux’s Haut-Médoc makes some of the world’s finest wines and three of the best – Premiers Grands Crus Classés – lie in Pauillac. This château isn’t Cru Classé but it’s a fine claret, now with 7 years age, and showing lovely cedary fruit maturity.

On Bordeaux’s Left Bank, in the heart of the Haut-Médoc, Pauillac is one of the most sought-after appellations for fine, muscular, long-aged claret. It boasts three Premiers Grands Crus Classés, namely Mouton-Rothschild, Lafite and Latour. Château Haut-Pauillac belongs to the Peyronnie family and boasts vineyards dotted between some of the finest estates – vines planted on gravel soils, enjoying a climate moderated by their proximity to the Gironde estuary. Largely Cabernet Sauvignon, softened by a little Merlot, the wine was aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 15-20% of which were new. To enjoy this fine claret, open an hour beforehand and decant. A superb red to serve with your finest red meat dishes or a choice of firm farmhouse cheeses.

Low Stock Château Labégorce 2020

Château Labégorce 2020

Item Code: 0988020

Description

Just a stone’s throw from Château Giscours, Labégorce makes appealing Margaux, with all the character of this sought-after commune. This 92-93 point 2020 punches well above its price and offers very good value indeed when compared to its neighbours.

There's been immense praise from critics for Bordeaux's 2020 vintage, "another great year for Bordeaux" wrote James Suckling; "Margaux is one of the success stories of 2020" put Neal Martin, while Jancis Robinson declared "stunning wines have been produced". Although yields were down, Margaux performed well and Château Labégorce is an excellent buy. Unlike many of its neighbours Labégorce wasn’t classified in 1855, meaning that the wines remain today very well priced. With vines on average 30 years old, some over 100, they yield grapes of tremendous concentration, the flavour of which is flattered by ageing for 15 months in half-new oak barrels. With rich, warm black fruits, espresso notes and firm rounded tannins, this is a keeper.

Low Stock Chateau Saumade Corbieres 2021

Chateau Saumade Corbieres 2021

Item Code: 3294021

Description

This warm-fruit, herbal-spice Corbières is a worthy Gold medal winner. It's from an amazing 12th-century estate, where the vineyards are perfectly sited on steep, stony slopes so yields are tiny. Intense with real southern French richness.

There are documents showing that wine was made at this beautiful property as early as 1172, when it belonged to Ermengarde, Countess of Narbonne. We don’t know the exact style and quality then, but today it is exemplary – Corbières at its sensuous best! The estate has been in the same family now since 1803 – seven generations of women and now Guillaume Allien, the eighth generation. Despite being in his final year as a medical student, Guillaume gave it all up to restore the family estate and learn winemaking.

He works with consultant Gilles Dejean to make this luscious, dark-fruited red, which speaks clearly of its stony soils, the herbal-scented garrigue and its Corbières provenance. A warming red that’s perfect for a rich casserole.

For customers looking for a bargain, Bordeaux wines are a rich hunting ground. Rich, velvety clarets with appealing ripe fruit going for a song. Château de la Grande Tour is from the highly respected Christian Dumas and already a Gold-medal winner.

Château de la Grande Tour is a petit château estate in the hands of Christian Dumas, whose family is very well respected in Bordeaux circles. This wine regularly wins Gold. The judges described the 2020 vintage as “Perky nose of ripe garden berry fruits. The palate is crisp, well-balanced and savoury and shows more of the same, extremely delightful aromas ... already very enjoyable”, and the 2022 has just scooped another Gold. It’s a classic blend of mostly Merlot, with a healthy dash of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc – a delicious balance between ripe fruit, structured tannins and freshness. Low Stock Château Pavie-Macquin 2021

Château Pavie-Macquin 2021

Item Code: 0921821

Description

DW Wine Club Member Price: $699

Château Pavie Macquin was founded by in the 19th century by Albert Macquin, the man credited for introducing grafted vines to France thus saving the country's vineyards from destruction by phylloxera.

In 2021, winemaker Nicolas Thienpont waited patiently for perfect ripeness, harvesting the grapes as late as October 19th. The resulting wine is a stunning expression of this exceptional vintage and terroir. Intense black and blue fruit aromas mingle with captivating floral notes of violets and iris. The palate is full-bodied and structured, with polished, tensile tannins that beautifully balance the wine's exuberant fruit. There is excellent drive and elegance through the long, compelling finish, suggesting this Pavie-Macquin will age gracefully for years to come. A profound Saint-Émilion that exemplifies the heights of this celebrated appellation.

94-95 points James Suckling

"Lots of blackberry and inky character to this year. Always refined and polished with lovely length and medium body. 79% merlot, 19% cabernet franc and 2% cabernet sauvignon." (6/2022)

93-95 points Wine Advocate

"Another success in this challenging year is the 2021 Pavie Macquin, a promising effort that offers up aromas of sweet berries, Indian spices, licorice and bay leaf. Medium to full-bodied, layered and incisive, it's a tensile, tightly wound wine that's concentrated and penetrating, concluding with a mineral finish. Its low pH profile means that this is always an estate that gains a lot from élevage, but even at this early stage, it's clear that this has excellent potential. (WK)" (4/2022)

94 points Decanter

"Bramble, coffee and caramel notes on the nose. Juicy and vibrant on the palate, this has a gentle coursing of strawberry and blackcurrant fruit with blackcurrant leaf giving a savoury, almost herbal edge, while the crushed stone and slate bring in minerality and salinity on the finish. Detailed and nuanced - I like the overall texture, there is grip and aromatic interest with density, chew and a gorgeous core of acidity that keeps things playful and joyous. Supremely alive and thriving on the palate with a persistence that doesn't let up. I love this and think it will be excellent after ageing. Tasted twice. (GH)" (3/2022)
