Low Stock Karl H Johner Pinot Noir 2018

Karl H Johner Pinot Noir 2018

Item Code: 4114718

Description

Wine Advocate wrote of this cellar, "Karl Heinz and Patrick Johner have been among Germany's leading Pinot Noir producers for a long time." Karl Heinz started out in 1985, joined a decade later by his son. This is a very fine, expressive Pinot.

Karl Heinz Johner is very much a family estate, even if half the family (mum and dad) have disappeared to run the Johner estate in New Zealand (also to great acclaim). Patrick has been left to run the show in Baden, and does so with aplomb. Karl H first learnt his skill in England, running a large winery. There he gained an in-depth knowledge of France's finest Pinot Noirs. Baden isn't that far from Burgundy, so in 1985 he returned home determined to show that his wines could be equally good. Neither he, nor Patrick, have been shy of challenging tradition, so you'll find their wines rarely fit within the rules. James Suckling wrote of the 2017 "Top quality for this humble category." Aged for a year in new barriques, this wine will age well.

Low Stock Ken Forrester Stagmanskop Chenin Blanc 2021

Ken Forrester Stagmanskop Chenin Blanc 2021

Item Code: 4228021

Description

Ken Forrester is South Africa's 'Mr Chenin' - he's mad about the grape. And sustainability too. This fabulous white is from the exciting new, coastal-cooled Piekenierskloof region. Stagmanskop is a dazzling ray of pure citrus, with apple and blossom.

Ken Forrester is world renowned for his expertise with Chenin Blanc and has won an enormous number of top awards for them. He was one of the first in the Cape to show just how brilliant this grape could be. Ask him how to make a perfect Chenin, he answers "I wish I knew" and continues "Chenin is the most delicious wine and it is totally at home barefoot or in high heels and a dinner suit." Ken is also a strong advocate for sustainability and care for the community which, together, means everything is done by hand with meticulous care. Stagmanskop is a pure, citrusy Chenin from high vineyards, that look down on the Atlantic and are cooled by strong coastal winds. Enjoy its bright citrus, apple and melon fruit. Great with spicy Asian dishes.

Kir-Yianni Assyrtiko 2021

Item Code: 4240121

Description

From the mountain slopes of Amyndeon, in NW Greece, comes this crisp, apple-fresh and citrusy white. It's from a renowned, 5th-generation winemaking family and uses the prized Assyrtiko grape, "the most thrilling sip yet" (Times). A dazzling white.

If you've visited Greece and enjoyed the wine, you're very likely to have sampled a bottle from Boutari, the dynasty that brought the country's wine industry back to life. The family started the business in 1879. A century later, 4th-generation Yiannis, started on a quest to promote a more regionalised, boutique-style of production, planting a high-altitude vineyard too. Eventually he broke away from the family, becoming one of the leading figures of modern Greek wines. His winery is named Kir-Yianni and his son Stellios took charge in 1999, meticulously combining innovation with respect for tradition. The outcome is exceptional wines like this fine Assyrtiko. Crisp and stony fresh, it's great solo, with seafood or, of course, Greek salad.

Low Stock L'Art Provençal Rosé (magnum) 2020

L'Art Provençal Rosé (magnum) 2020

Item Code: 3960120

Description

Racy-fresh Provençal pink with plenty of classic berry flavour, in an impressive magnum!

Provence rosés are renowned for being some of the very finest. With lovely berry fruit and freshness, as well as a sophistication you'd expect of a region frequented by the rich and famous. Many tourists flock there every year too, to enjoy the sun, sea and beaches. Indeed, Provence has an ideal climate both for tourists and for growing vines. The region enjoys twice as much sunshine as London – yet relatively moderate temperatures even in the height of summer.

This delightful pink is from the Bréban family’s small domaine in the Côte d’Azur. Their southfacing vineyards are surrounded by wooded hillsides, with well drained soils. The result is a fine pink with subtle berry fruit. Spot on with salmon, salt and pepper squid or simple sipping.

L'Épiphanie de Pauillac 2020

Item Code: 3882020

Description

We’d love to reveal the name of the illustrious château behind this fine claret, but we’re sworn to secrecy. We can reveal, though, that it’s made at a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate in Pauillac whose Grand Vin sells for sixteen times the price.

L’Épiphanie de Pauillac is the latest of our secret releases from iconic Bordeaux châteaux. It hails from Pauillac’s top tier – a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate. There are only three in the appellation: Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild and Latour. We guarantee this wine is from one of them. It isn’t their Grand Vin, of course, but it’s made from the same fruit by the same winemaker and housed in the same barrels. Yet it costs less than 1/16th of the Grand Vin’s price.

L’Épiphanie de Pauillac has blackcurrant, cherry and ripe plum infused with subtle spice, cedar and cigar box notes. These classic aromas combine with firm tannins for a complex wine with a long finish. By all means open a bottle now, but cellaring will pay dividends.

La Cantera Reserva 2019

Item Code: 0825719

Description

La Cantera is so reassuringly smooth and welcoming that each new vintage release is like the return of an old friend. Well, it is made by one of our greatest friends in Spain, Javier Domeque.

He’s been making this gloriously mature treasure exclusively for us for nearly 20 years, and only ever ships La Cantera when it’s been aged to smooth, mellow perfection. Javier works under the radar in Cariñena, where wine has been made for 2,000 years. But the region is overlooked in favour of world famous neighbour Rioja, so you enjoy superb value for money here (and, in the case of La Cantera, Rioja style quality). This is made from old vine Garnacha and Tempranillo and has rich, deep red berry flavours softened by years in barrel and bottle.

La Porte des Princes Grenache 2021

Item Code: 2004121

Description

Southern Rhône red from an award-winning Châteauneuf winemaker and a high-quality vintage. The cellar for this wine is in prestigious Châteauneuf, and the vineyards are just next door. Ripe and luscious Grenache, it’s all juicy fruit and spice.

With Gold medals galore, Thierry Ferlay has made wine all over the world but remains fondest of the warm, ripe reds of the southern Rhône. He also adores their chief grape, Grenache – the most important variety in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In fact he’s in charge of winemaking at this renowned appellation’s only co-operative winery, where all the growers are part owners of the enterprise. Naturally, maximising quality is at the forefront of their minds, which explains this wine’s exceptional flavour and value.

Made purely from Grenache, it has irresistible raspberry fruit, hints of spice and a peppery edge. Enjoy with ratatouille, lamb chops and homemade burgers. And because it’s so smooth and not too heavy, it’s ideal sipping on its own, too.
