Bernard Moreau has been in charge of his small family domaine in the Mâconnais since 1982 and is now assisted by his son, Alex, as winemaker. It lies very close to a village called Chardonnay, just like the grape! For this white, they use fruit from their 60-year-old vines, planted on calcareous soils and with excellent sun exposure. This is the perfect formula for wine with depth and concentration.

Plus, 2022 whites are blessed with richness, body and ripeness, a generous year. Bernard tends his vines with the utmost care, using sustainable, eco-friendly methods. This results in a wine with a balance of creamy roundness, ripe pear, crisp minerality and finesse. Serve cellar cool with creamy sauced dishes to best enjoy its subtle flavour.

Decanter has named Domaine Zind Humbrecht as one of France’s Top 10 wineries: “Does winemaking genius exist? If it does then Olivier Humbrecht MW must be in the frame.” Wine Advocate called the wines “absolutely impressive in their depth”. The family have been Alsace growers since 1620 and started making their wines in 1947. They now have 40 hectares, all tended biodynamically – by 22 full-time staff – to express as perfectly as possible the grape and its limestone ‘calcaire’ terroir. “Pinot Gris is a grape which has strong ties to the earth. For a true taste of modern Spanish winemaking of the highest order, taste this fine white. From a tiny Basque appellation in northern Spain, close to the Atlantic, and made from a rare grape, this great white is mineral bright and intensely citrusy.

Getariako Txakolina is a small region in Spain's Basque country, very close to the Atlantic and the French border. It's cool there, often wet, and ocean breezes further help keep temperatures down. The outcome is extremely zesty-fresh whites. This is an outstanding 2018 from a great winemaker, Maitena Barrero. She's daughter to one of Tony Laithwaite's first Spanish contacts, Tony Barrero, and certainly has wine in the blood. She works at a very tiny estate and makes this terrific, linear-fresh white from the Hondurrabi Zuri grape. Fermented carefully with no oxygen contact and aged on its lees, it is superbly fresh, lemony and mineral-zipped, with that saline hint of the sea and a characteristic slight bubble too. First class with seafood.
