Tahbilk is not only the oldest family-owned wine estate in Victoria (1862), it's also carbon neutral and has a stellar reputation for quality. This cool-climate Cabernet is "terrific value" (Halliday). A leafy, ripe, spicy plum Cabernet that'll age.

In 1920, wine lover Reg Purbrick was offered a glass of brandy from Château Tahbilk. Five years later, he purchased the property unseen! Reg's son Eric inherited his father's love of wine and, during the Great Depression, he gave up a law degree to decamp to Oz and take up the reins at Tahbilk. Three generations later, Hayley Purbrick is in charge of sustainability, while her father, Alistair, runs the estate. They are just one of eight wineries worldwide to be classified carbon neutral. Their 160 hectares of regenerated wetland and native vegetation are beneficial to the climate, as well as offering trails for all to enjoy. This fine, barrel-aged Cabernet is from cool Nagambie Lakes – dark spicy berry fruit with a leafy edge. Decant early.

From the 4th-generation De Martino family, Italians who left their homeland for South America in 1934, this is a luscious, ripe red. Twice named 'Chilean Winery of the Year', they specialise in sustainable practices in the vineyard and carefully match each grape to its optimum region. Cabernet Sauvignon excels in Chile’s Maipo region which has a mild Mediterranean climate and alluvial soils producing elegant wines with great structure. Sant Inés is a brooding red made from a carefully selected parcel, hand harvested, traditionally fermented, then aged in French oak barrels for a year. Top vintage of this cracking Cabernet Shiraz. Every year the RedHeads winemaker, Alex Trescowthick, chooses the best grapes. In 2021 these were two A-grade parcels from premium Barossa and Coonawarra. Immense kirsch, eucalyptus and lavish oak spice.

Henry Laithwaite is the originator of this wine, but he now has his hands full with his own English Sparkling wine estate in Marlow. So RedHeads winemaker, Alex Trescowthick, stepped up to the plate. He was handed a gift too. The Shiraz grapes were top notch for starters – from some of the winery's finest growers – usually destined for their Icon wines. The Cabernet is from Coonawarra, Australia's best region for this variety. It was a parcel destined for a larger cellar's flagship wine. The first year it was wrongly delivered to RedHeads! The grower rang and apologised for the fortuitous accident. It made a cracking wine and now Alex gets it every year! The superb conditions of 2021 only added to the wine's power, dense fruit and weight.
