Caroline and Pierre Bécot are the fourth generation of the family to be proud owners of the Premier Grand Cru Classé Saint-Emilion property Château Beau-Séjour Bécot. In 2015 they added the 9-hectare vineyard château of Bernon Bécot to their family estate. It lies on the highest clay-limestone plateau of Puisseguin, a satellite appellation of Saint-Emilion itself. There they work sustainably in the vineyard, working hand in hand with nature to bring out the best in the vines, which are nearly all Merlot, with just a little Cabernet Franc. This is the 2016 – a vintage that has matured slowly and very well and showing lovely maturity and depth. With good structure, elegance and richness, this is a classic wine with roast red meats.

It’s rare to see a French Merlot of this calibre at this price. This is partly explained by its provenance, the Languedoc Roussillon, “the most exciting region in France” (Sunday Times), which also provides much of France’s best-value wine. But credit must also go to ‘Merlot maestro’ Claude Gros, who perfected his skills in Saint-Émilion. Among his many successes is a now famous Merlot-rich Grand Cru, Château La Fleur Morange, that scored 96/100 from critic Robert Parker. Claude returned to his southern French roots, and Domaine Ginestières at the heart of the Minervois, where he makes this majestic Merlot at an amazingly down to earth price. Some say it was devised in Taranto, Puglia, as a cure for the tarantula’s bite (provided victims danced for three days and nights); others say it was an antidote to the morso (bite) d’amor. Less mythical, but equally enchanting, is the origin of its namesake wine.

Lussac is a satellite appellation of Saint-Emilion, renowned for its high-quality, good-value clarets. Château de Lussac is one of the best, this superb 2004 showing mature notes of mellow, toasty red fruit, with hints of cedar and spice box.

Château de Lussac is a historic property, dating back to Gallo-Roman times. Vineyards were first planted by Benedictine monks, while the château you see today was built in 1876. It has changed hands three times, most recently purchased by the Laviale family in the early 2000s. They have worked hard to elevate the estate to be one of the leading properties of this satellite Saint-Emilion appellation. Most of the 23 hectares of vines are Merlot, with a little Cabernet Franc, bordered to the north by woodland. This superb, 20-year-old claret was aged for 15 months in 30% new oak, the rest in one-year-old barrels to lend this wine its structure and longevity. Showing mellow fruit complexity, enjoy alongside simple meat dishes or a firm cheeses.
