Bartolomeo Lorenzi Amarone 2020

Item Code: 3629120

Description

If you love bold, powerful reds that leave an impression, this dense, cherry-charged Amarone is for you. It’s made by specialist of this style, Cantina Negrar – Italy’s 2016 ‘Winery of the Year’. Rich, textured, with lots of spiced red fruits.

Wine Enthusiast calls Amarone “one of 15 icons in Italian wine”. They are certainly some of the country’s most treasured reds. Rooted in the ancient tradition of sun-drying grapes before fermentation, Amarone wines offer exceptional richness and a glorious combination of power and complexity that cellars well, too. No wonder they are sought after worldwide. This 2020 from esteemed Cantina Negrar pays tribute to 18th century poet Bartolomeo Lorenzi, whose epic poems celebrating rural life made Valpolicella wines famous.

The grapes are from the ancient, dry, stone terraces of the cool Marano Valley, where they ripen slowly. They are then air-dried for 120 days to intensify flavours. Decant early and enjoy with hearty dishes, or cellar.

Gold Star Red Wine 2018

Item Code: 4082418

Description

The Gold Star label from this winery is reserved for wines that really stand out for quality. That's very true of this rich, dark Merlot, Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah blend, all from top Napa subregions. A velvety, spiced fruit Napa red to snap up.

This is a fabulous, rich, ripe, beautifully structured red from some of the top subregions of the Napa Valley. Stars that include Rutherford, St Helena and Oak Knoll. It's a small leftover parcel that was offered to our buyer at a really sharp price. She snapped it up on tasting it. We can't spill the beans on the source, but it really is the business, which you'll taste in every drop. Not only are the grapes – a luscious, mouthfilling blend of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah – from some of the Napa's smartest addresses, the 2018 vintage was "the finest of the past two decades." Critic Jeb Dunnuck concluded that "the wines are beautifully balanced and are going to age gracefully". A rich, long flavoured red. Decant for best results.

Low Stock Herdade Aldeia de Cima Reserva 2018

Herdade Aldeia de Cima Reserva 2018

Item Code: 4173918

Description

From Winemaker of the Year, Jorge Alvès, this is a very fine, elegant and expressive Alentejo red. All native grapes, sustainably grown, with a very light hand in the cellar, it is textured, complex and elegant with spiced black fruit and freshness.

You may know the name – Amorim – largest producers of cork in the world. This, however, is winemaking on a micro-scale, amongst the oak forests of Alentejo. The family have come together and restored a wine estate that was founded in 1758. They combine the very best modern thinking with the great traditions of the past – that means using clay-pot amphorae and terracotta tinajas, as well as barrels, for the winemaking. Above all, however, is a true respect for the area's ecosystem, with sustainability at its core, plus minimal intervention in the wine cellar. The vineyards for Almeia de Cima lie at the highest point (424 metres altitude) to ensure a freshness and balance to this fine wine, made from all-native Portuguese grapes. Open early.

Low Stock Ivana's Odiseya 2020

Ivana's Odiseya 2020

Item Code: 4008120

Description

From a family that’s been winning Golds for their wines since 1907, this is a ripe, juicy blend of Merlot and Cabernet. It’s made by husband and wife team Ivana and Yuli, based in Bulgaria’s Thracian Plains. A fruity, forward style to enjoy any time.

Ivana's Odiseya has a story that starts in the 1900s. Her husband's family had a winery in SW Bulgaria and, as early as 1907, it was winning Golds in London. Fast forward to 1945, Russian tanks rolled in and the family lost winery and land. They never gave up hope of regaining their property and once more making award winning wines. In 1989, state monopoly ceased, private ownership returned and many wineries fell into disrepair, including one on the Thracian Plains, close to the Rhodope Mountains. Yuli and Ivana came across it and dreamed of restoring the cellar to its former glory. The going's been tough, but Yuli persevered in the vineyards and Ivana learnt winemaking. Now they’re reaping success with, amongst others, this fruity red.

Low Stock Way & Cat South Australia Red Blend 2020

Way & Cat South Australia Red Blend 2020

Item Code: 4149520

Description

For lovers of juicy ripe reds, this sun kissed Aussie wine is the cat’s pyjamas. Individually sourced parcels of grapes, fermented, then blended ensure an overflow of fruit forward flavour. Silky plum, raspberry and a sinuous smoky wrap.

This juicy, full of fruit Aussie red sums up the best of Aussie wine – gorgeous ripe fruit, good intensity and freshness. Great value too. Way & Cat is short for ‘wayfaring catador’, catador being Spanish for taster. So the name is a tribute to how the team source their fruit – they head out into the vineyards to taste the grapes of their grower friends. When they find the selections they like, they vinify each parcel separately, then blend the results into fruit first expressions of the varieties they chose.

That blend changes vintage by vintage, depending what performs well that year. It's top for versatility too – great as a glass on its own, tasty with roasted vegetable quiche, sausage and mash. And just the ticket at a barbecue.
