But that should come as no surprise when you consider the heritage of winemaker Scipione Giuliani. This maestro was born in the very heart of the Prosecco region. A true local, he knows all the best winegrowers and went straight to the region's very finest vineyards (usually owned by long-standing friends) to source the fruit for this fine fizz. This fine Champagne marks the 50 year anniversary of Laithwaite’s. It’s pure Chardonnay from the grower Paul Goerg and the outstanding 2002 vintage. Long aged on its lees, it has lovely, creamy, toasty brioche notes as well as citrus, honeyed fruit.

We were looking for a particularly fine fizz to mark the 50th anniversary of Laithwaite’s Wine’s launch onto the world. We’ve certainly found it with this superbly rich, complex and elegant 2002. It’s pure Premier Cru Chardonnay from the tiny production, Champagne grower Paul Goerg. Secondary fermentation in bottle was followed by five years’ ageing on its lees (the standard is two), then another few years more, after dosage and the finishing of the wine. This Champagne was launched by Tony back in the 1970s and he’s still proud of it. No doubt he’ll be cracking open a few bottles during this special anniversary year, as well as tucking a few away in his cellar. An excellent celebration Champagne, when only the best will do.

Spain’s sparkling wines are all too often overlooked in favour of Prosecco or Champagne. But what if you could have a fizz that’s made like a prestige Champagne at the price of a Prosecco? Introducing Oriol Rossell’s supremely elegant, organically farmed Cava. Oriol Rossell is a historic estate that’s run just like a top Champagne house. Grapes are hand picked from estate vineyards and the wine is made in the traditional method as used in Champagne. This artisan method results in a top quality bubbly that rakes in awards.

The Pignoletto grape is considered the “king of the Colli Bolognese wine zone”, but few have heard of it outside of the Emilia region of northern central Italy. Our buyer, Leo, had to use his persuasive prowess to secure cases of this hidden gem from winemaker Daniele Artioli. And it’s proved to be a huge hit with our customers. It’s an easy to drink, dry frizzante, made using mainly Pignoletto (named after ‘pigna’ – the Italian for ‘cone’ – due to the shape of its bunches).

Its lively green apple notes are enhanced by citrusy Trebbiano and Muscat, which lends a grapey aroma. A gentle fizz makes it a delightful apéritif, perfect for leisurely sipping in the garden on a sunny afternoon. Serve chilled and pair with salad or seafood.
