Alambrado Malbec 2023

Item Code: 0217123

Description

For delicious drinkability, elegance and value among reds, look to Alambrado. This wine is from Argentina's outstanding Zuccardi cellar, winner of many awards. Pure dark, velvety Malbec, it's a very moreish with its fig, plum and mocha notes.

Silky fruit-filled Alambrado is from Familia Zuccardi, one of the finest cellars in all Argentina. Three times it has been awarded Argentina's 'Top Value Brand' by IWC and head of the family, José Zuccardi, was given a lifetime achievement award by the same competition in 2016.

As well as having state-of-the-art facilities in both Maipó and Ucó, the family are committed to employing the many local families who have served the company from the beginning. He says, "We believe in using people rather than machines whenever possible.” This smooth, fruity red is made purely from Argentina’s flagship grape, Malbec. It’s tasty on its own and very versatile with food: from grilled meats, veggie kebabs, a squash bake or simple sausage and mash.

Low Stock Arquero Malbec 2023

Arquero Malbec 2023

Item Code: 3540023

Description

Fans of Argentinian Malbec will enjoy delicious Arquero. It’s from a family-owned bodega in the San Juan region. There vines grow as high as 700 metres, yet the climate is warm, producing silky, supple ripeness in this spicy, berry-filled red.

Argentina’s Malbec has taken the world by storm. While most come from Mendoza, Arquero hails from San Juan in the northwest. Vineyards are planted high, around 700 metres, under clear skies, providing optimal conditions for the vines. Despite producing delicious wines, the region’s lack of marketing muscle means they remain something of a secret. Here you’ll find Bodegas Antigua, started in 1990 by wine enthusiast Don Luis Victor Chirino. A builder by trade, he bought a winery with land for vines. His HQ is a historic building and local landmark, erected in 1918 and one of San Juan’s first earthquake-proof structures. After restoration, it’s been transformed into a wonderful cellar. A red ideal for solo sipping, or with grilled meats.

Low Stock Domaine La Sobilane 2021

Domaine La Sobilane 2021

Item Code: 4092121

Description

For an authentic taste of southern France at its best, open a bottle of La Sobilane. Using Chardonnay alongside native Grenache Gris and Vermentino, winemaker Maurice has made a ripe, exotic fruit white, with a hint of spice and lemony freshness.

Search for Domaine La Sobilane and you'll see it has an amazing reputation for the famous, fortified sweet wine of this Mediterranean area, Rivesaltes. Some wines going back 80 years. They are knockout, but so is the estate's gorgeous, opulent dry white. Rivesaltes hasn't been a fashionable tipple for the last 30+ years, so the enterprising family, situated close to the Med and just east of Perpignan, explored other avenues. They planted native varieties which they believed would excel and made a dry white. This exotic blend of Grenache Gris and Vermentino with Chardonnay proves them right – ripe peach and apricot meld beautifully with a bright lemony zip and characterful notes of grilled almonds and blossom. Ideal choice with chicken.

Le Malbec d’Hervé 2023

Item Code: 3965623

Description

Here's a cracking red from Hervé Sabardeil, winemaker behind favourites Cabalié to Chante Clair. He discovered 30-year-old Malbec in the Languedoc. The grapes were top quality, begging to be vinified solo. The upshot: a seductive ripe red.

Hasn't Malbec come a long way! It used to produce the tough, tannic reds of SW France, then Argentina got a hold of it and made it a worldwide star. Not to be out done, France is revisiting this grape and, with refined techniques and careful handling, showing just how appealing its wines can be. Hervé discovered a plot of 30-year-old vines in the Languedoc's Vallée de l'Orb, on soils covered with big boulder-like stones that promote grapes with lovely intensity and ripeness. Impressed, he bagged the lot. Hand harvesting, gentle handling, and just a short time on its skins, have resulted in a silky, ripe, supple wine, with ample fruit tinged with herbs and liquorice. A fine choice with marinaded pork chops, roast chicken or veggie kebabs.

Low Stock Le Rosé de La Clarière 2022

Le Rosé de La Clarière 2022

Item Code: 3184522

Description

So pretty, so fresh, the most delectable Bordeaux rosé – from our own château in Castillon, Bordeaux.

If you come to visit us at Château La Clarière in the heat of summer, we’re sure to offer you a well-chilled glass of rosé. It’s a must, even if you’re a red wine drinker. And when the pink is this good, it would be foolish to resist. We don’t usually have enough grapes to make any sizeable quantity (the rest is reserved for our claret), but the wine has such a following that we always ensure we make some.

It’s a 50/50 blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, fermented very slowly and cold in stainless steel tanks. That way we capture the delicate summer berry fruit and zippy citrus freshness. You can breathe in all its lovely aromas, too. It really is as pretty and crisp as its label suggests, and is delicious solo and versatile with food.

Lobo e Falcão 2023

Item Code: 1948223

Description

Fans of smooth, mouthfilling wines take note – this is a sure contender for the Big Red crown, now with hundreds of 5-star reviews. A delicious blend of Portuguese grapes from a former royal falconry, it has lovely warmth, richness and spicy fruit.

Wine Spectator calls Portugal “the most exciting wine place on the planet”, with its terrific range of native grape varieties and wines that always offer standout value. The rich, mouthfilling Lobo e Falcão fits firmly in that category. It’s made at a 17th-century estate owned by the Lobo de Vasconcelos family, once the location of the king’s falconry. Special barrels of wine were kept for the king when he visited. Today, talented winemaker Joana Lopes makes this red specially for us, blending Syrah with Portugal’s exciting native grapes. Previously awarded a Wine Enthusiast Best Buy Award, the 2023 has lovely intensity of flavour and velvety smoothness. Generous berry fruit and spice – a very moreish red on its own, ideal for a barbecue.

Opi Malbec 2023

Item Code: 2582523

Description

This appealing red carved a name for itself on the world stage when it was named ‘Best Malbec of Argentina’ on its debut vintage. An impressive feat in a country that’s renowned for the quality of its Malbec. Velvety smooth with ripe black fruit.

Rodolfo Sadler, affectionately known as Opi, is one of Argentina’s most exciting talents. He’s an easy going, affable man, with a hint of mischief in his eyes – yet he’s incredibly humble. When probed about the secret of crafting such exceptional wines (two of which are always in our Top 20!), he simply shrugged and said, “this is how my family has always made wine.” Typical Opi – seriously modest. And why ‘Opi’? The nickname comes from his childhood, when his little sister would follow him through the family vineyards, calling out ‘Opi, Opi’, as she couldn’t quite pronounce his name. Now, four decades on and an internationally renowned winemaker, the name’s firmly stuck. Enjoy this delicious red with a grilled steak or hearty casserole.
