Château Haut Pougnan has a long history of awards – seven Golds just last year. 150 years of experience and well-placed vineyards just over the river from the Right Bank stars, plus an exceptional vintage in 2020, have raised this rich-fruit claret.

A family estate since 1852, Château Haut Pougnan lies in the gently rolling hills of the Entre-Deux-Mers, just across the river Garonne from the famous names of the Right Bank. On their 34-hectare property, in Saint Genès de Lombaud, Merlot is the star grape, with Cabernet Sauvignon in a supporting role and a little Cabernet Franc, all ripening well on the southeast-facing slopes. In cooler, west-facing vineyards, the estate grows Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle to make a fine classic white. 2020 was an exceptional vintage in Bordeaux with " a balance of richness and energy” wrote critic Antoni Galloni. Enjoy that power in this silky, well-ripened claret. Delicious now (open early and decant) or cellar. A treat with roast meats.

The judges described the 2020 vintage as “Perky nose of ripe garden berry fruits. The palate is crisp, well-balanced and savoury and shows more of the same, extremely delightful aromas ... already very enjoyable”, and the 2022 has just scooped another Gold. It’s a classic blend of mostly Merlot, with a healthy dash of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc – a delicious balance between ripe fruit, structured tannins and freshness. The Angus is a glorious ripe Aussie blend of the classic Bordeaux trio Cabernet, Merlot and Petit Verdot. It comes from the McPherson family, also behind The Full Fifteen, and provides a truly satisfying mouthful of dark fruit and spicy flavour.

There's no doubt about it, Big Mac McPherson makes a mean, BIG red - indeed, he's been making some of our popular weighty Australians for years. He's passed this skill on to his son Angus, as well as a bug for travelling. Angus, like his dad did before him, has been gaining experience around the world, but has recently returned to the cellar, keen to show his worth.

Believing the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, Angus has blended this gobstopper red from Bordeaux's Cabernet, Merlot and Petit Verdot. It has lovely, dark fruity appeal, with plenty of spice from the Petit Verdot and juicy plummy Merlot filling it out. A touch of firmness makes it great with food. Decant The Angus and serve with slow cooked lamb or rare roast beef.
